LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team was unable to shake its recent case of the blues.
The Golden Eagles shot just 26.4 percent on Friday and were overwhelmed by San Francisco State, 73-55, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (12-9, 8-9 CCAA) dropped its third straight home game and lost for the sixth time in its last seven games.
San Francisco State (14-7, 12-5 CCAA) avenged an overtime loss to the Golden Eagles earlier this season and remained in third place in the conference.
Marquel Hoskins hit all eight of his field-goal attempts and finished with a team-high 18 points. He also had nine rebounds. Winston Demmin had 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Gators built a 38-18 halftime lead and had leads as large as 32 points in the second half. Cal State L.A. pulled to within 13 points, 65-52, after a 3-pointer by Session with 2:40 left, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would get. Hoskins made a layup with 2:15 remaining to stop the Cal State L.A. run.
The Golden Eagles struggled against San Francisco State's defense all evening. The Golden Eagles were just 5-of-27 in the first half (18.5 percent) and warmed up only slightly in the second half (9-of-26). The Golden Eagles were 7-of-20 from behind the 3-point arc, including 5-of-9 in the second half.
San Francisco State hit 49.2 percent of its shots on 30-of-61 shooting. The Gators also forced 14 turnovers while committing only eight. The Gators also had a 40-38 rebounding edge.
The Golden Eagles got the opening basket of the game on a 3-pointer by Session, but San Francisco State only trailed one more time, 8-7, after two free throws by Hopkins. Matt Fochtman scored four straight points to start an 8-0 run that gave the Gators a 15-8 edge. Norris hit a 3-pointer to make it 15-11, but San Francisco State went on a 17-0 run to open up a 32-11 advantage. The Golden Eagles were held scoreless for more than seven minutes.
The Gators kept on the onslaught in the second half and opened up a 56-24 lead with 13:30 remaining. San Francisco State still led by 29 points, 63-34, with eight minutes to play before a 3-pointer by Hopkins got the Golden Eagles going. Cal State L.A. went on a 15-0 run to pull to within 63-49 with 3:10 to go and a 3-pointer by Session made it 65-52 with 2:40 left.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
