Golden Eagles Come Up Short In CCAA Tournament Defeat

TURLOCK – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team saw its hopes for a third straight trip to the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament championship game dashed on Friday.

The Golden Eagles, seeded No. 2 in the four-team tourney, fell to CCAA North Division champion Chico State, 1-0, Friday at Warrior Stadium on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus. Cal State L.A. (12-4-3) had won the title in 2009 and reached the title game last season.

Cal State L.A. was beaten for the first time in seven CCAA tournament games. The Golden Eagles were 4-0-2 in their previous six contests, including a 1-0 win over Chico State in 2009. Officially, the Golden Eagles tied Chico State, 0-0, in the 2007 title game and San Francisco State, 1-1, in the 2010 title match before falling in penalty kicks.

The Golden Eagles, though, could not muster any offense against a stout Chico State defense on Friday. The Wildcats didn't, either, but they got the game's only goal just three minutes into the second half. Shelby Duncan notched her fourth goal of the season with an assist from Carly Singer and that was it.

The Golden Eagles didn't register a shot in the first half and didn't get their first attempt until a header by Andrea Lammers sent wide in the 55th minute. Cal State L.A. had only one shot on goal in the contest, an attempt from outside the box by Lisa Ohberg that was saved by Brianna Furner.

Jessie Walworth made three saves for the Golden Eagles, including a sensational stop of the only shot by either team in the first half. Chico State's Lisa Webster took a shot from inside the box that Walworth dove to deflect just outside the far post.

Cal State L.A. wound up with an 8-5 advantage in shots, but seven of the eight were off target. Chico State had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, including a 5-0 advantage in the first half.

The Golden Eagles finally began to sustain some pressure late in the second half, but were unable to get the equalizer. Natalie Martin had a good look from the middle of the box in the 86th minute, but her shot sailed high. Lammers had a header off a free kick from Justine Telles go wide in the Golden Eagles' final attempt with just more than one minute remaining.

Cal State L.A. will now wait for the announcement of the NCAA Division II playoff field on Monday. Six teams will advance from the West Region. Seattle Pacific of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Grand Canyon of the Pacific West Conference have wrapped up their conferences' automatic bids. Chico State will face the winner of the Cal State Stanislaus-UC San Diego semi-final on Sunday for the CCAA title and automatic berth.

Cal State L.A. was ranked second in the most recent NCAA poll and will be vying for one of the three at large bids remaining in the region.
