POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball appeared to be well on to continuing its recent string of victories, but Cal Poly Pomona quickly turned the tables.
The Golden Eagles held a 2-0 lead in sets, but the Broncos stormed back to win, 18-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-12 Wednesday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in Kellogg Gym. Cal State L.A. (12-12, 9-10 CCAA) had its three-match winning streak snapped and lost for the second time this season to Cal Poly Pomona (12-12, 9-10 CCAA).
Marquis Mora had 12 kills and six blocks to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Chelsea Hamilton had 11 kills and four blocks.
Mary Laupepa had eight kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
Kristin McNeese had a match-high 14 kills to lead the Broncos, while Taylr Kreutziger had nine kills and four blocks.
Cal Poly Pomona had a 57-54 edge in kills and an 11-3 advantage in service errors. Both teams had eight blocks. The Broncos hit at a .194 percentage to just .156 for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A.'s offensive efficiency dropped off dramatically after the first set and the Golden Eagles hit at a .191 in the second set, .038 in the third, .185 in the fourth and at a negative percentage in the fifth. In the deciding set, the Golden Eagles had just six kills and seven attack errors.
Kaylynne Taeatafa had seven kills, 38 set assists and 17 digs for the Golden Eagles.
April Reyes had 14 digs.
The Golden Eagles started well, but simply couldn't maintain their momentum throughout the match. After trailing, 8-7, in the opening set, Cal State L.A. got kills by Hamilton and Mora and a service ace by Laupepa to take the lead for good. A Laupepa kill opened up a 21-14 lead and, after Cal Poly Pomona closed to within 22-18, a kill by Hamilton, a block by Mora and Hamilton and a kill by Hamilton ended the set.
The second set was tied at 22-22 before kills by Hamilton and Mora and a block by Taeatafa and Mora gave the set to the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A., though, would never grab a lead in any of the final three sets. The Broncos jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set and never looked back and jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the fourth and never trailed. The Golden Eagles closed to within 21-20 after a kill by Hamilton, but couldn't get any closer.
Cal Poly Pomona led for most of the fifth set before a kill by
Briana Fields tied it at 10-10. Cal Poly Pomona scored the next two points before a kill by Mora and a Bronco attack error knotted things up at 12-12. Cal Poly Pomona scored the final three points on a pair of attack errors and a match-ending kill by Diana Lake.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a match at San Francisco State.
