Golden Eagles Swept By No. 24 Chico State In CCAA Match

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team was hoping for a little momentum after its win Friday night, but those aspirations were dashed in a hurry on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles were overwhelmed by No. 24 Chico State and swept in three sets, 25-20, 25-15, 25-16 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (7-9, 4-7 CCAA) struggled all night slowing down a potent Chico State attack.

The Wildcats (14-3, 9-2 CCAA) won their sixth consecutive match by playing big down the stretch in the first set and never letting up in the final two. The Wildcats hit at a .307 percentage for the match, while Cal State L.A. hit at a .085 clip. Chico State had a 41-31 edge in kills and a 9-3 advantage in blocks.

Samantha Potter had nine kills and nine digs for the Golden Eagles, while Chelsea Hamilton and Natalia Gonzalez had six kills each. Kaylynne Taeatafa had 26 set assists and seven digs.

Jessica Leek led the Wildcats with 10 kills, while Alex Shurtz and Makenzie Snyder had nine kills each. Sable Villaescusa had 31 set assists and six digs.

April Reyes had a team-high 11 digs for the Golden Eagles.

The first set was close early and the Golden Eagles were tied at 12-12 after a kill by Taeatafa. The Wildcats, though, opened up a 23-17 after a strong run that was culminated by a service ace by Lauren Orozco. Kills by Potter and Hamilton brought the Golden Eagles to within 23-19, but a service error stopped the run and Chico State closed out the set on another Cal State L.A. service error.

The Golden Eagles led early in the second set, but Chico State went on another big run and took a 15-9 lead after a block by Shurtz and Jacqueline Johnson. A kill by Hamilton, a service ace by Alexandra Risko and a kill by Potter got the Golden Eagles to within 17-14, but the Wildcats scored the next seven points to take control of the set.

The Wildcats came out in the third set and quickly grabbed a comfortable 18-8 lead. A kill by Gonzalez got the Golden Eagles back to within 21-15, but the Wildcats allowed only one point the rest of the way and closed out the match.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday night against Cal State Monterey Bay on “Think Pink” night for breast cancer awareness.
