HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team ended its regular season with an offensive explosion and can now set its sights on its third straght trip to the four-team California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.
The Golden Eagles got goals from six different players and beat Cal State East Bay, 6-1, Sunday at Pioneer Stadium. Cal State L.A. (12-3-3, 10-3-3 CCAA) finished second in the CCAA South Division and had 33 points, which is the second-highest total in the conference. Cal State L.A. will face CCAA North Division champion Chico State in a first-round game at Cal State Stanislaus on Friday at 11 a.m.
Cal State L.A. recorded a season high in goals on Sunday and scored five of the six goals in the first half. The Golden Eagles finished the game with a 15-10 advantage in shots.
Jessie Walworth and
Kylie Garcilaso combined to make four saves in goal with each playing one half.
Norie Pablo opened the scoring just 1:54 into the game when she scored her fourth goal of the season.
Andrea Lammers had the assist, sending a cross into the box that Pablo was able to shoot into the net.
Lammers made it 2-0 in the 10th minute with her third goal of the season with an assist from Pablo. Lammers passed initially to Pablo, who passed it back to Lammers whose shot found the upper part of the goal.
The Golden Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the 17th minute when
Natalie Martin scored her first goal of the season.
Justine Telles sent a corner kick into the box and Martin headed it into the net.
Marissa Pickett got her first goal of the season in the 33rd minute with an assist from
Gabbi Segall. An initial shot by Segall was saved by the Cal State Monterey Bay goalkeeper, but the rebound was deflected to Pickett, who drove it into the net. Cal State L.A. made it 5-0 before halftime when
Lisa Ohberg scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Segall picked up her second assist after passing to Ohberg into the box, where she found an open net.
The Pioneers got their goal in the 57th minute when Shianna Falk knocked home a cross from Eugenie Foote inside the far post.
Janet Mendez completed the scoring in the 83rd minute when Ohberg chipped a ball into the box that eluded the goalkeeper and Mendez sent it into the net for her third goal of the season.
Since starting the conference schedule with back-to-back 1-0 losses, Cal State L.A. went 10-1-3 over its final 14 games. The Golden Eagles will be making their third straight appearance in the conference tournament and their fourth in the last five years. Cal State L.A. won its first-ever CCAA title in 2009 and reached the championship game of the tournament in 2010.
