Rosario Bras Named CCAA Soccer Player Of The Week

WALNUT CREEK – Cal State L.A.'s Rosario Bras has been named the Wilson/ California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 17-23, the conference announced on Monday.

Bras, a junior forward from Guadalupe, scored three goals in two games last week to help the Golden Eagles move into a first-place tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills in the CCAA South Division. Cal State L.A. beat San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona in its final two regular-season games at Jesse Owens Stadium.

Bras had two goals in the Golden Eagles' 3-0 win over San Francisco State. He gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead in the 29th minute when he knocked in a rebound off a header from Taylor Rivas. He then rounded out the scoring with a spectacular header goal with assists from Marvin Sandoval and Jason Swope.

Bras had another goal on Sunday to help the Golden Eagles beat Cal Poly Pomona, 2-1. He scored in the 73rd minute on a shot from inside the box to give Cal State L.A. a 2-0 lead. That turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Bras now leads the Golden Eagles with nine goals and four assists for 22 points.

He becomes the second Cal State L.A.'s men's player to earn the weekly honor this season. Antti Arvola was honored for the week of Aug. 29 - Sept. 4.

Cal State L.A. now shares the CCAA South Division lead with Cal State Dominguez Hills with 29 points. Cal Poly Pomona is third with 26 points. Chico State leads the North Division with 29 points, while Sonoma State has 26 points and Cal State Stanislaus has 25 points. Four teams will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.

The Golden Eagles are also fifth in the first NCAA Division II West Region poll released last Wednesday. The top four teams in the region will qualify for the 32-team NCAA playoffs.

Cal State L.A. will conclude the regular season with road games at Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and Cal State East Bay on Sunday.
