Golden Eagles Stay In CCAA Chase With Win Over SF State

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team kicked off its final home weekend of the season with a much-needed California Collegiate Athletic Association win over San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles got a pair of goals from Rosario Bras and a goal from Derek Faulkner and went on to beat the Gators, 3-0, in Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (9-1-5, 7-1-5 CCAA) extended its unbeaten streak to seven with its second 3-0 victory over San Francisco State (5-8-2, 4-8-1 CCAA) this season.

The Golden Eagles now have 26 points and are locked in a three-way tie for the CCAA South Division lead. Two North Division teams, Sonoma State and Chico State, also have 26 points.

Cal State L.A. got two goals in the first 29 minutes of the game, but things certainly weren't easy for the Golden Eagles. San Francisco State controlled the play for extended periods, but could not convert its chances. The Golden Eagles' defense was strong in the second half and limited the Gators' opportunities in the final 45 minutes.

Both teams ended up with nine shots -- the Golden Eagles allowed only two shots in the second half. Cal State L.A. had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Waleed Cassis made four saves for the Golden Eagles, while Eric Scolman made one save for the Gators.

Cal State L.A. opened the scoring in the sixth minute on the second goal of the season by Faulkner. After a failed San Francisco State clearance, Timo Schwar sent a pass into the box and, with Jason Swope shielding a pair of defenders, Faulkner took it on the run and knocked a hard shot that bounced off Scolman and over the line before a Gator defender could clear it.

San Francisco State then had several chances to tie the game before the Golden Eagles got their second goal. Luis Mendoza had a good look for the Gators, but sent a shot wide. After the Gators controlled the ball deep in Golden Eagle territory, Jose Vitela hit a shot that sailed over the crossbar. Cassis then made a pair of diving stops to keep the Gators off the board. First, he just got a piece of a shot by Gilbert that resulted in a corner kick. Seconds later, San Francisco State got a shot by Malcolm Linton that Cassis got his fingertips on.

The Golden Eagles grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 29th minute when Bras scored his first goal of the game. Marvin Sandoval sent in a cross off a corner kick that was initially headed by #Taylor Rivas#. Bras knocked it into an empty goal for his seventh goal of the season. The corner kick was earned by Jordan Payne, who battled San Francisco State defenders to force the ball out.

The Gators had a good chance to slice the lead in half before halftime, but a bid by Vitela was deflected by Cassis. Bras also had a chance late in the half, but his bid just went over the crossbar.

The Golden Eagles got the only goal of the second half when Bras got his second of the game and team-best eighth of the season. On a corner kick, Sandoval got the ball to Swope, who went in a cross that was headed beautifully into the goal by Bras.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with its regular-season home finale against Cal Poly Pomona. It will also be Senior Day and the Golden Eagles will honor their seven seniors in pregame ceremonies.
