SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team had its nine-game unbeaten streak snapped Sunday by the hottest team in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and never could get untracked and lost to Cal State San Bernardino, 2-0, Sunday at Coyote Premier Field. Cal State L.A. (9-3-2, 7-3-2) was 7-0-2 over its last nine games, including an exciting 1-0 overtime win over UC San Diego on Friday. Cal State San Bernardino (8-5-1, 6-5-1) won its sixth straight match, its longest streak in program history.
Both teams have shrugged off slow starts to their conference schedules and now find themselves in postseason consideration. Cal State L.A. remains second in the CCAA South Division with 23 points after starting the conference with two consecutive losses. Cal State San Bernardino, which started 0-5-1 in conference play, now has 19 points.
Cal State L.A., ranked 20th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, had allowed only five goals all season before Sunday and surrendered more than one goal in a game for the first time this season. The Golden Eagles and Coyotes split their regular-season series with each team posting a 2-0 win on its home field.
Cal State San Bernardino scored a goal in each half to get the win. Emily Mardon scored off a corner kick in the 34th minute to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead and Jani Carmona scored on a counter attack in the 82 minute to give the Coyotes their second goal.
Jessie Walworth made six saves for the Golden Eagles, while Chelsea Jones made four saves for the Coyotes.
Cal State San Bernardino had a 13-10 advantage in shots, including a 7-3 edge in the opening half. The Coyotes also had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. All five Cal State L.A. corner kicks came in the second half.
The Golden Eagles managed only three shots in the opening half and gave up a goal late in the period. Sierra Van Meter sent a corner kick into the box and Mardon received it and knocked it past Walworth to make it 1-0.
The Golden Eagles got more pressure on the Coyotes in the second period, but were unable to score. Cal State L.A. got three corner kicks in a five-minute span late in the game, but Cal State San Bernardino held firm and struck for its second goal after a long punt by Jones. Carmona ran it down, eluded the Cal State L.A. defense and scored her second goal of the season.
Cal State L.A. got a shot by
Marissa Pickett in the 82nd sail wide, but that was the Golden Eagles' final attempt of the game.
Norie Pablo had two of the Golden Eagles' 10 shots in the contest.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against defending conference champion San Francisco State.
