Golden Eagles Turn The Tables In Overtime Win Over Gators

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team was able to turn the tables on San Francisco State Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Main Gymnasium.

The Golden Eagles got a game-tying 3-pointer by David Norris in the final minute of regulation to send the game into overtime and went on to beat the Gators, 85-80, in a dramatic conference contest. Cal State L.A. (10-2, 6-2 CCAA) won its fourth straight game and took over sole possession of third place in the conference.

The game had a much different ending than last year's matchup in San Francisco. In that game, Cal State L.A. was unable to hold on to a 10-point lead in the final minute of regulation and lost in overtime.

On Saturday, it was the Golden Eagles who rallied. Cal State L.A. trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, but battled back and ultimately sent the game into overtime when Norris knocked down a 3-pointer with 37 seconds left to tie the game at 69-69. San Francisco State's Marquel Hoskins missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer before the buzzer.

In the overtime period, the Golden Eagles fell behind 71-69, but got a go-ahead 3-pointer by Norris and never looked back. A steal by Chris Robinson led to a basket by Norris, a later free throw by Norris and a layup by Leland Jones made it 77-71 and completed a game-breaking 8-0 run. San Francisco State got as close as three points after a 3-pointer by Hoskins made it 81-78 with 44 seconds left, but Norris hit two more free throws to boost the lead back to five points.

Hoskins scored on an offensive rebound to make it 83-80 with 10 seconds left, but Trevor Hopkins made two free throws with eight seconds left to complete the big victory.

Norris finished with a game-high 26 points, while Franklin Session had 22 points and six rebounds. Carl Hoffman had 13 points and four rebounds and Jones had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Nefi Perdomo had 21 points to lead San Francisco State (7-5, 5-3 CCAA), while Hoskins finished with 18 points. Phoenix O'Rourke had 10 points.

The Golden Eagles wound up shooting 42.9 percent for the game after making 30-of-70 field-goal attempts. San Francisco State made 50.8 percent of its shots (30-of-59).

Cal State L.A. made 18-of-30 free throws, but was outstanding in the overtime period. The Golden Eagles were just 5-of-13 in the second half, but made seven of eight in overtime. Cal State L.A., after missing its first field-goal attempt in overtime, made its last four.

Cal State L.A. was out-rebounded, 42-37, but forced 19 turnovers while committing just nine. The Golden Eagles had nine steals -- three by Norris and two each by Robinson, Session and Bussey Ellis. Ellis had six points, a season-high nine rebounds and four assists.

Cal State L.A. was outscored, 11-2, in the last five minutes of the first half and trailed at halftime, 37-28. San Francisco State got the opening basket of the second half to take its first double-digit lead and still led by 11 at 46-35 with 14:36 remaining.

The Golden Eagles made several runs, but San Francisco State was able to stop each one -- until less than five minutes remained. The Golden Eagles were still down by seven points, 61-54, with 4:38 left before a quick 7-0 run knotted things up. Session made a layup and then a steal and another layup to make it 61-58. Session then made a layup off a pass from Ellis and converted a free throw to tie the game at 61-61 with 3:16 left.

After a layup by Tim Pratt stopped the run and gave the Gators the lead, a 3-pointer by Norris gave the Golden Eagles a 64-63 edge with 2:48 remaining. O'Rourke responded with a 3-pointer to put the Gators back ahead, but a layup by Session tied it again at 66-66 with 1:45 to go.

Perdomo hit a go-ahead 3-pointer for the Gators with 1:20 to go and the Gators successfully stopped the Golden Eagles on their next possession. Norris, though, made a steal and knocked down a 3-pointer to tie it and, after Hoskins missed his 3-pointer, the game headed into overtime.

After the Gators took their brief lead in overtime, Norris hit another 3-pointer and the Golden Eagles were on their way.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Thursday with a road game at UC San Diego.
