TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was unable to straighten things out Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest against Cal State Stanislaus.
The Golden Eagles were swamped by a big first-half run and fell to the Warriors, 96-73, Friday in FItzgerald Arena. Cal State L.A. (6-11, 3-10 CCAA) lost its fifth straight game and dropped its second game this season to Cal State Stanislaus (9-8, 7-6 CCAA).
Cal State L.A. had way too many turnovers and not enough rebounds to thwart the Warriors. The Golden Eagles had 27 turnovers -- including 17 in the first half -- to just 16 for the Warriors. Cal State Stanislaus also enjoyed a 43-26 rebounding edge.
The Golden Eagles shot reasonably well, making 23-of-53 field-goal attempts (43.4 percent) and 23-of-27 free-throw attempts (85.2 percent). Cal State Stanislaus, though, made 38-of-77 field-goal tries (49.4 percent) and 14-of-21 free-throw attempts. The Warriors were also 6-of-14 from behind the 3-point arc, while the Golden Eagles were just 4-of-13.
Sonia Miller had a season-high 16 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures.
Lacy Ramon had 15 points,
Alisha Belt had 11 points and
Erika Ruiz had 10 points.
Katie Busi had a season-high 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead Cal State Stanislaus. Lauren Godde had 17 points, Andreanna Marshall had 13 points, Theresa Henderson had 11 points and Rosa Tirado had 10 points.
Gretchen Tiernan had eight points for the Golden Eagles, while
Angeline Jefferson had seven points and three steals.
The Golden Eagles started well and helds leads as large as five points early in the contest. A 3-pointer by Ruiz and a layup by Miller gave Cal State L.A. a 14-10 edge and two free throws by Ramon made it 18-13.
Cal State L.A., though, was then outscored, 25-5, to fall behind by 16 points, 35-19, and Cal State Stanislaus eventually built its lead to 21 points, 51-30, by halftime.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 32 points in the second half. Back-to-back baskets by Tiernan and a basket by Belt cut the margin to 21 points, 71-50 and two free throws by
Danielle Snyder cut it to 20 at 84-64 with five minutes remaining.
Two free throws by Belt got the Golden Eagles to within 19 points, 86-67, but that was as close as they could get.
Cal State L.A. will continue its roadtrip in Chico with a game against Chico State on Saturday.
