Golden Eagles Fall Short In Defensive Battle At CSUS

TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team continued its offensive struggles and, as a result, was unable to pick up a key road California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

The Golden Eagles were held under 60 points again and fell to Cal State Stanislaus, 56-55, Friday in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State L.A. (11-6, 7-6 CCAA) slipped to sixth place in the conference after dropping its third straight game.

The Golden Eagles had their chances, but were unable to overcome the Warriors (7-10, 5-8 CCAA), who led by as many as nine points in each half. Cal State L.A. tied the game at 52-52 with 1:48 remaining, but the Warriors scored the next four points and a halfcourt 3-pointer by Franklin Session at the buzzer merely brought the Golden Eagles to within one point.

After the Warriors took a 54-52 lead with 1:34 to go, the Golden Eagles missed two field-goal attempts and three free throws before Session's 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Session had 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Golden Eagles, while Carl Hoffman had 12 points and five rebounds. Bussey Ellis added 10 points and three assists. David Norris had eight points, while Chris Robinson had six points and eight rebounds.

Reggie Jones had 14 points for the Warriors, including four straight down the stretch. Dwight Jones had 10 points.

Cal State L.A. made 20-of-52 field-goal attempts (38.5 percent), while Cal State Stanislaus was 18-of-44 (40.9 percent). The Golden Eagles were 8-of-22 from behind the arc (36.4 percent), while Cal State Stanislaus was 9-of-21). The Golden Eagles, though, were just 7-of-16 from the free-throw line, while the Warriors were 11-of-12. Cal State L.A. was just 4-of-11 from the line in the second half and missed its last six tries.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, but managed to pull to within one point, 23-22, at halftime. Cal State L.A. was just 8-of-26 (30.8 percent) in the first half and just 3-of-12 from behind the 3-point arc, yet trailed by just one point at the break.

Cal State L.A. took the lead briefly early in the second half, but the Warriors once again opened up a nine-point lead, 47-38, with 7:38 to go. The Golden Eagles got back-to-back 3-pointers from Ellis and Session to make it 47-44, but the Warriors' Marcus Lever hit a 3-pointer to bump the lead back to 50-44.

A Hoffman layup and a 3-pointer by Session sliced the deficit to 50-49 and a free throw by Session and a tip-in by Hoffman tied it up at 52-52 with 1:48 remaining. Jones made a layup to give the Warriors the lead for good at 54-52 and his two free throws with 2.4 seconds left made it 56-52.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a road game at Chico State.
