Golden Eagles Drop A Tough One To Warriors In Overtime

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team certainly had its chances to snap its frustrating losing streak, only to find more disappointment in the end.
 
The Golden Eagles rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit, missed two golden chances to win the game in regulation and ultimately fell to Cal State Stanislaus, 70-67, Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest.
 
Cal State L.A. (4-22, 2-19 CCAA) lost its 11th consecutive game and Thursday's contest will be one of the hardest to take. The Golden Eagles worked for a final shot at the end of regulation and, after Jazzi Johnson missed a shot in the lane while slipping, Jordan Kuzma grabbed the rebound, but missed a potential game-winning shot before the buzzer.
 
The Golden Eagles grabbed a three-point lead in the overtime period, 65-62, but Cal State Stanislaus closed out the game on an 8-2 run to get the win. Cal State Stanislaus (8-16, 7-13 CCAA) kept alive its hopes for a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament, pulling to within one game of seventh-place Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State San Bernardino.
 
Johnson had 15 points and five rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while Sonia Miller had 13 points, Shatori Dearman had 12 points and nine rebounds and Kuzma had 10 points and five rebounds.
 
Katie Busi had a game-high 16 points for the Warriors, while Christin Gowan had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists and Nathalie Olveda and Alishea Kelly had 10 points each.
 
The Golden Eagles shot 40 percent from the field and limited Cal State Stanislaus to 36.4 percent shooting. Cal State L.A. held a 50-43 rebounding edge, but had 22 turnovers to 13 for the Warriors.
 
Cal State L.A. was 25-of-41 from the free-throw line and Cal State Stanislaus was 11-of-16.
 
The Golden Eagles struggled from the floor in the first half, making only 4-of-17 attempts. Cal State L.A., though, made 14-of-30 in the second half to get back into the game.
 
The Warriors shackled the Golden Eagles in the first half and opened up a 31-17 lead with 2:12 to go in the half. A late layup by Dearman made it 31-22 at halftime.
 
The Warriors built their lead up to 15 points, 37-22, with 18 minutes to play before the Golden Eagles began their rally. A 3-pointer by Miller capped a 14-2 run that wiped out a 39-28 deficit with 12 minutes to go. A jumper and a pair of free throws by Johnson gave the Golden Eagles a 56-52 lead with 3:27 to go, the Warriors scored the next four points to tie it. A layup by Miller put the Golden Eagles ahead, 58-56, but Busi scored to tie it at 58-58 with 1:30 remaining. Cal State L.A. got two free throws from Dearman to take a 60-58 with 42 seconds left, but a layup by Andreanna Marshall tied it and set up the wild ending to regulation.
 
A 3-pointer by Olveda gave the Warriors a 67-65 lead, but two free throws by Johnson tied it for a final time. Wynter Turner made a layup to give the Warriors the lead for good. The Golden Eagles turned the ball over after a botched inbounds play and Gowan hit one free throw to make it 70-67. Jameiz Terrell got off a hurried 3-pointer before the buzzer, but it missed the mark.
 
Cal State L.A. will conclude its season on Friday with a home game against Chico State.
