Golden Eagles Come Up Short Against CS Monterey Bay

SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team couldn't overcome a lengthy first-half dry spell Saturday night.

The Golden Eagles surrendered the last 13 points of the opening period and fell to Cal State Monterey Bay, 69-47, Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Seaside. Cal State L.A. (4-19, 2-16) dropped its eighth straight game.

Cal State L.A. shot just 35 percent from the floor and made only 8-of-15 from the free-throw line and 1-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc. Cal State Monterey Bay (15-7, 11-7 CCAA) shot 48 percent and knocked down 10 of their 27 tries from behind the 3-point line. The Otters were also 11-of-17 from the free-throw line.

The Golden Eagles held a 31-27 rebounding advantage, but also committed 19 turnovers to 11 for the Otters.

Jazzi Johnson had 21 points and five rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while Jordan Kuzma added nine points and five rebounds. Shatori Dearman added six points and four rebounds.

Veronica Williams had 21 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay, while Michelle Santizo had 16 points and five rebounds.

The Golden Eagles had a decent start and held a 12-11 lead after a basket by Kuzma with 11:39 remaining in the half. The Otters surged to an eight-point lead, 24-16 before four straight points by Dearman and a basket by Kuzma made it 24-22 with 4:33 remaining in the half.

The Golden Eagles, though, were held scoreless for the remainder of the half and Cal State Monterey Bay scored 13 straight points to take a 37-22 halftime lead.

The Otters scored the opening basket of the second half to stretch their run to 15 consecutive points before Kelli McClintick scored on a layup to break the string. Johnson got hot and scored 13 straight Golden Eagle points to bring Cal State L.A. within nine, 46-37, with 9:21 to go. A 3-pointer by Desiree Dominguez kept the margin at just 10 points, 52-42, with 6:49 remaining, but Cal State Monterey Bay scored the next eight points to break the game open.

Cal State L.A. will play its final four games of the season at home, beginning with a Friday contest against Cal Poly Pomona.
