Golden Eagles Struggle Offensively In CCAA Opener

Box Score

CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team did not get the results it wanted in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener.

The Golden Eagles struggled offensively all evening long and fell to No. 19 Cal State Dominguez Hills, 54-38, Saturday night in the Torodome. Cal State L.A. (3-1, 0-1 CCAA) shot just 25.5 percent from the floor and managed only 19 points in each half.

The Golden Eagles limited the Toros (5-0, 1-0 CCAA) to just 40 percent shooting, but Cal State Dominguez Hills enjoyed a significant 48-26 rebounding edge and prevented the Golden Eagles from mounting any kind of charge.

Leland Jones had 11 points and three rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while David Norris had eight points and three rebounds.

Michael Cox led all scorers with 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Toros, while Amir Aguilar had nine points and nine rebounds and Zarek Zargaryan had nine points.

Cal State Dominguez Hills scored the first five points of the game and led from start to finish. A basket by Chris Robinson got the Golden Eagles on the board, but the Toros extended their lead to 9-2 by scoring the next four points. After a layup by Franklin Session made it 9-6, the Toros scored the next nine points to take an 18-6 lead.

The Toros stretched their lead to 28-14 before a 3-pointer by Trevor Hopkins sliced the deficit to 28-17. A basket by Norris late in the half made it 30-19 at halftime.

Cal State Dominguez Hills got the opening basket of the second half and never trailed by less than 13 points the rest of the way. Cal State L.A. got a 3-pointer from Bussey Ellis to make it 42-27 with 10:55 still remaining in the game, but the Toros responded with the next five points to essentially put the game out of reach.

The offensive difficulties for both teams were especially apparent from behind the 3-point range, where Cal State L.A. was just 4-of-23 (17.4 percent) and Cal State Dominguez Hills was just 3-of-13 (23.1 percent).

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home conference game against Cal State San Bernardino.
