Golden Eagles Open Regular Season With Home Victory

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team got its 2010-11 season off to a good start.
 
The Golden Eagles had three players score in double figures and limited Holy Names to just 29 percent shooting in a 73-52 victory in the season opener in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (1-0) jumped out to a 39-20 halftime advantage and had double-digit leads for the entire second half.
 
Chris Robinson had 21 points and five rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while Franklin Session had 13 points and six rebounds. Leland Jones had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
 
Johnas Street had 13 points to lead Holy Names (1-5). Tyrell Vaughn, and Antoine McKiinzie had eight points each.
 
Cal State L.A. shot 48 percent in the first half and limited Holy Names to only five first-half baskets. The Golden Eagles shot 47 percent for the game.
 
The Golden Eagles had a slim 39-38 rebounding edge and committed 22 turnovers to 25 for the Hawks.
 
David Norris had nine points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Ryan Wetherell had nine points and five assists.
 
Cal State L.A. knocked down nine 3-pointers, including four by Robinson, two by Trevor Hopkins and one each by Wetherell, Session and Bussey Ellis.
 
Cal State L.A. scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed. A 3-pointer by Robinson and layups by Wetherell and Norris staked the Golden Eagles to the quick lead.
 
A layup by Robinson gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the first half at 37-14 and Cal State L.A. settled for a 39-20 halftime lead.
 
The Golden Eagles moved out to a 24-point lead, 46-22, after a layup by Session, but the Hawks battled back to slice the deficit to 52-36 after a pair of free throws by McKiinzie with 10:24 to go. A free throw by Robinson and a 3-pointer by Robinson boosted the lead back to 20 points, 56-36 and the Golden Eagles never led by less than 16 points the rest of the way.
 
Cal State L.A. had its biggest lead of the game at 71-46 after a basket by Norris with 2:35 to go.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action with another home game on Wednesday night against Hope International at 7:30 p.m.
