CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team made sure history did not repeat itself Wednesday night in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles, who were burned by a late Cal State Dominguez Hills rally last year in Carson, held off the Toros this time around and posted an important 63-56 victory in the Torodome. Cal State L.A. (8-2, 4-1 CCAA) won its four straight conference game and was victorious for the seventh time in its last eight games.
Cal State L.A. is one of five teams in the CCAA with just one conference loss.
Dwayne Jones had a game-high 21 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Chris Fields had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Mark Dorsey had six points and seven rebounds, while
Nuno Furtado had six points and six rebounds.
Michael Cox led Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-8, 2-3 CCAA) with 17 points and Tim McLaurin added 16 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Cal State L.A. shot 50 percent for the game (22-of-44) and made 56.5 percent of its shots in the second half. The Golden Eagles limited Cal State Dominguez Hills to 40 percent shooting, including just 26.1 percent in the opening half.
The Golden Eagles also had another strong rebounding effort, holding a 35-25 advantage in that department. Cal State L.A. had 19 turnovers, while Cal State Dominguez Hills committed 17.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as 14 points in the second half and held an 11-point lead with less than two minutes remaining and then had to hold off a spirited Cal State Dominguez Hills rally. The Toros cut the deficit to just four points and had a one-and-one opportunity at the line, but a missed free throws was grabbed by Dorsey and Fields made a pair of free throws to finally put the game away.
Cal State L.A. needed almost four minutes to get on the scoreboard, finally doing so on a basket by
Carl Hoffman that sliced an early Toro lead to 3-2. Cal State Dominguez Hills still held a four-point lead, 22-18, before Cal State L.A. closed the half with an 8-0 run to take a 26-22 halftime lead. A Fields jumper and two free throws by Fields tied the game, a tip-in by Dorsey gave the Golden Eagles the lead and a jumper by Jones gave the Golden Eagles their four-point halftime lead.
Cal State Dominguez Hills rallied to open the second half and took its last lead of the game, 31-30, with 17:51 to go. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Jones gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A 12-2 run later in the half stretched the Golden Eagles' lead from 41-37 to 53-39 with six minutes remaining. A basket by Hoffman, a steal and dunk by Jones, a tip-in by Dorsey, a pair of free throws by Fields, a basket by Jones and another basket by Fields gave Cal State L.A. its biggest lead of the game.
The Golden Eagles still held a healthy lead until the final minute when the Toros scored seven quick points to make it a four-point game, 60-56. Fields then hit three free throws down the stretch to wrap up the win.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
