Golden Eagles Unable To Hold Off Humboldt State Rally

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team put itself in position to post its biggest victory of the season only to see a lengthy dry spell spoil the evening.

The Golden Eagles held a six-point lead with 13 minutes to play, but were held without a basket over the final 11 minutes in a 69-52 California Collegiate Athletic Association loss to Humboldt State Saturday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (4-15, 2-12 CCAA) has now lost four straight since beating Chico State in Chico last Friday.

Cal State L.A. took a 44-38 lead with 12:48 to go, but was outscored, 31-8, the rest of the way. After Humboldt State (14-4, 12-2 CCAA) fought back to tie the game, a three-point play by Jazzi Johnson put the Golden Eagles ahead, 47-44 with 10:54 remaining.

The Golden Eagles then fell apart as Humboldt State turned up its defensive pressure and turned the game completely around. The Golden Eagles still trailed by just three points, 55-52, after a free throw by Johnson with five minutes to play, but Humboldt State scored the final 14 points to put the game away.

Cal State L.A. shot just 32.7 percent for the game, but also did a good job of containing Humboldt State, which was only slightly better at 36.5 percent. The 'Jacks misfired on 16 of their 22 attempts from behind the arc and made only 17-of-28 free throws.

Cal State L.A. was 16-of-24 from the line and held a 45-39 rebounding edge. The Golden Eagles, though, had 27 turnovers to 18 for Humboldt State.

The difference in the game was the Golden Eagles' offensive collapse in the final 11 minutes.

Johnson finished with a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double, but missed 12 of her 14 field-goal attempts. She led the conference in field-goal percentage shooting entering the contest.

Jordan Kuzma had a strong game with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Shatori Dearman had eight points and seven rebounds.

Andrea Bobic had a game-high 20 points to lead three Humboldt State players in double figures. Brittney Taylor added 17 points and six rebounds, while Luiza Osborne added 11 points.

The Golden Eagles played well early, jumping out to a 16-11 lead after a three-point play by Kuzma. A 3-pointer by Jameiz Terrell gave the Golden Eagles a 21-17 lead with just under seven minutes left in the half, but Humboldt State closed the period with a 15-7 run to take a 32-28 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles also started the second half well and took a 44-38 lead after a basket by Kuzma with 12:48 to go. After Johnson's three-point play gave the Golden Eagles a 47-44 lead, 3-pointers by Osborne and Bobic gave the Jacks the lead for good. Humboldt State grabbed an eight-point lead, saw the Golden Eagles slice the deficit to 55-52 after a free throw by Johnson and then blanked Cal State L.A. the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a road game at Cal State East Bay on Thursday.
