TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team put together a spirited rally, but saw it come up just short Saturday against Cal State Stanislaus.
The Golden Eagles sliced a 15-point second-half deficit down to one point before falling to Cal State Stanislaus, 62-59, Saturday night in Warrior Arena. Cal State L.A. (4-12, 2-9 CCAA), which knocked off Chico State on Friday, settled for a weekend split of California Collegiate Athletic Association games.
Shatori Dearman had a team-high 16 points and six rebounds, while
Jordan Kuzma had 14 points and five rebounds.
Jazzi Johnson had 11 points and five rebounds and
Kelli McClintick had nine points.
Katie Busi had 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Warriors (4-11, 3-8 CCAA). Alishea Kelly had 14 points and eight rebounds and Christin Gowan had 13 points.
The Golden Eagles shot 40 percent for the game (18-of-45), while limiting Cal State Stanislaus to just 33.8 percent (23-of-68). The Golden Eagles also hit 19-of-25 free-throw attempts (76 percent) and Cal State Stanislaus was 13-of-18 (72.2 percent). Both teams had 19 turnovers.
The Warriors, though, enjoyed a hefty 39-28 rebounding edge, including an 18-4 advantage on offensive rebounds.
Cal State L.A. took a 14-12 lead on a basket by
Danielle Snyder and took its biggest advantage of the game, 18-15, on a basket by Kuzma with 8:02 left in the half. Cal State Stanislaus, though, went on an 8-0 run to take the lead for good and settled for a 31-24 halftime lead.
The Warriors extended their lead to 15 points, 51-36, with 9:40 left in the game before the Golden Eagles started their rally.
Sonia Miller got it off and running with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws by Kuzma and one by Miller cut the deficit to nine points, 51-42, with seven minutes remaining.
The Warriors still led by seven points, 57-50, with 2:38 remaining, but a jumper by McClintick, two free throws by Johnson and a layup by Dearman made it 57-56 with 48 seconds to go. Cal State Stanislaus, though, responded with a layup by Gowan to boost the lead back to three, 59-56, with 27 seconds to go. McClintick missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer and the Warriors got the rebound and made three free throws down the stretch.
Kuzma hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left to pull the Golden Eagles back to within three points.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with the first of three home games next week beginning with a contest Wednesday against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
