LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team rebounded from its loss earlier Friday with a win over Mesa State Friday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles survived a stern challenge from Mesa State and prevailed, 25-23, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, in their second match in the UC San Diego Triton Invitational at the RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A. (3-2), ranked 21st in the nation, opened the day with a three-set loss to Alaska Anchorage.
Gabriela Bulawczyk led a balanced Cal State L.A. attack with 15 kills and 14 digs.
Zuzana Cizova had 14 kills and 11 digs and
Marquis Mora had 10 kills and seven blocks.
Cal State L.A. had a 62-57 edge in kills and hit at a .306 percentage. Mesa State hit at a .257 percentage. The Golden Eagles struggled once again from the service line, where they had four aces, but 13 service errors. Cal State L.A. had a slim 10-9 advantage in blocks.
Alisan Tompkins had 16 kills to lead Mesa State, while Tess Andrews had 15 kills.
Kaylynne De La Rosa had a strong match with 50 set assists and seven kills, while
Kassie Faulkner had nine kills and two blocks.
All four sets were competitive throughout. The Golden Eagles had a 17-13 lead in the first set, but Mesa State pulled to within 21-20. A kill by
Chelsea Hamilton and an attack error made it 23-20 before a kill by Cizova brought the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-21. Mesa State staved off two set points before a kill by Hamilton ended the set.
The Golden Eagles trailed through most of the second set were down, 22-20 before winning the next four points on a kill by Faulkner, an attack error and kills by Cizova and Bulawczyk got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-22. Mesa State fought back to tie it, but a kill by Cizova and a solo block by Mora put Cal State L.A. ahead, 2-0.
Mesa State held off a late rally by the Golden Eagles to win the third set and then came awfully close to forcing a fifth set. Cal State L.A. opened up a 19-13 lead and got to match point at 24-19 after a kill by Mora. Mesa State, though, scored four straight points before an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the win.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with two more matches on Saturday against Northern Michigan and Saginaw Valley State.
