LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team got off to a rocky start Friday morning in the UC San Diego Triton Invitational.
The Golden Eagles were swept by NCAA Division II West Region opponent Alaska Anchorage, 25-14, 25-22, 25-18 in RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A., ranked 21st in the nation, has dropped its last two decisions. The Golden Eagles (2-2) will return to action later Friday with a match against Mesa State.
Zuzana Cizova had seven kills and
Gabriela Bulawczyk had six kills for the Golden Eagles.
Kassie Faulkner had five blocks and two service aces.
McKenzie Moss had 13 kills to lead Alaska Anchorage (4-1), while Cortney Lundberg had 10 kills and hit at a .625 percentage.
Cal State L.A. struggled throughout the match and had a .030 hitting percentage. Alaska Anchorage posted more kills (43-27), blocks (11-7) and digs (41-32). The Golden Eagles had 24 hitting errors in their 101 attacks. The Golden Eagles had five service aces (Cizova and Faulkner had two each and
Keslie Brown had the other), but also recorded five service errors.
Bulawczyk had a team-high eight digs and
Stefanie Gay had seven.
Cal State L.A. fell behind by big margins early in the first set and never got untracked. The Golden Eagles trailed by a manageable 14-10 before Alaska Anchorage closed the set out with an 11-4 run.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the second set after a kill by Bulawczyk and a block by Bulawczyk and Faulkner, but Alaska Anchorage regrouped. Cal State L.A.'s final lead was at 22-21 following back-to-back kills by Bulawczyk and Cizova, but Alaska Anchorage scored the next four points to take the set.
Cal State L.A. got a block from Faulkner and Bulawczyk, a kill by Brown and a bad set by Alaska Anchorage to open up a 6-4 lead in the final set, but the advantage disappeared quickly. Alaska Anchorage scored the next five points and never looked back. The Golden Eagle deficit grew to 23-13 before a service error and kills by Cizova and
Chelsea Hamilton made it 23-16. The Golden Eagles staved off one match point on a kill by Faulkner that made it 24-18, but Alaska Anchorage won the next point to finish off the match.
Cal State L.A. will play again at 3 p.m. against Mesa State.
