LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team found itself on the wrong side of a shutout for the first time this season.
The No. 14 Golden Eagles surrendered an overtime goal to Cal State Dominguez Hills and fell to the Toros, 1-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (7-2, 4-2 CCAA) falls into a tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-4, 4-2 CCAA) for first place in the CCAA South Division.
Cal State L.A. had not been shutout this season before Wednesday and had posted seven shutout wins.
Cal State Dominguez Hills forward Jessica Murphy set up the game-winning score, racing down the left side of the field, eluding the Golden Eagle defense and sending a centering pass along the ground to Karina Jahn, who was right in front of the net. Jahn quickly shot it into the net to give the Toros the win.
Cal State Dominguez Hills was able to avenge a 3-0 defeat to Cal State L.A. in the conference opener on Sept. 8 in Carson.
The Toros had an 11-10 edge in shots, most of which from both teams were either wide or high of the net. Alyssa Congdon made one save for the Toros, while
Jessie Walworth made two saves for the Golden Eagles.
After a first half that saw few scoring chances, action did pick up in the second.
Ann Marie Tangorra was just wide with a shot after a nice centering pass from
Alex Conley in the 50
th minute.
Kastidi Robles followed with a free kick from just outside the box that sailed high over the crossbar in the 54
th minute.
Murphy had a pair of chances over the next 10 minutes, but Walworth denied her both times. The Cal State L.A. goalie was also able to clear a dangerous cross by Brooke Thompson just outside the right post.
The best scoring chance of regulation came from Robles, who had a point-blank attempt bounce off the crossbar and away from the goal in the 77th minute. A bid by Tangorra one minute later went just wide.
Murphy also had a good scoring chance with three minutes left in regulation after a long run down the left side, but her attempt sailed just wide.
Then, just a few minute into a back-and-forth overtime period, Murphy made the game-winning run and perfect centering pass that Jahn didn't miss.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home match against Chico State.
