Golden Eagles Double Their Fun With Win Over Falcons

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team finished off a successful first day of play in the Southern California Classic with a second victory.
 
A few hours after sweeping Alaska Fairbanks, the Golden Eagles battled past Seattle Pacific, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23, Friday in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (2-0) started the day with a 25-12, 26-24, 25-22 win over Alaska Fairbanks, giving new coach Randi Smart her first victory.
 
Chelsea Hamilton led the way in the win over Seattle Pacific (1-1) with 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .400. Gabriela Bulawczyk had 14 kills and 14 digs, while Kaylynne De La Rosa had 35 set assists, nine digs, four blocks and three kills.
 
Priscilla Collings had nine kills and 12 digs to lead the Falcons.
 
Cal State L.A., ranked 20th in the nation, hit at a .264 percentage and limited Seattle Pacific to a .119 clip. The Golden Eagles had a 44-33 edge in kills and a 6.5 – 5 advantage in kills. Cal State L.A. struggled with its serves, though, recording 11 service errors.
 
Stefanie Gay had a team-high 16 digs and Marquis Mora had a team-high five blocks to go along with five kills for the Golden Eagles.
 
Cal State L.A. never trailed in the opening set and used a 10-3 run to break a 14-14 tie and open up a 24-17 advantage after an ace by Hamilton and a kill by De La Rosa got the Golden Eagles to set point. Seattle Pacific scored the next three points after a service error, a block by Amber Johnson and Paige Hoffman and an attack error, but the Golden Eagles closed out the set on a kill by Bulawczyk.
 
Cal State L.A. jumped out to a 13-9 lead in the second set, but Seattle Pacific rallied back to grab a 17-16 lead after a kill by Angie Pricco. The Golden Eagles scored the next six points to regain the lead. Mora had a pair of kills and two blocks to key the run and Cal State L.A. ultimately finished the set with a kill by Bulawczyk.
 
The Golden Eagles opened up a 17-13 lead in the third set after a block by Kassie Faulkner and De La Rosa, but Seattle Pacific stormed back and took a 20-18 lead following a block by Lindsey Wodrich and Johnson and an attack error. Cal State L.A. took a 22-21 lead after a kill by Hamilton and, after Seattle Pacific tied it for a final time at 22-22, a kill by Hamilton and an attack error got the Golden Eagles to match point. A kill by Collings made it 24-23, but a kill by Mora ended the match.
 
Cal State L.A. will host a match between Western Washington and Ashland at noon before playing Western Washington in the tournament finale at 7 p.m. in the Eagles Nest.
