Golden Eagles Stumble Against San Francisco State

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team got its latest California Collegiate Athletic Association road trip off to a rocky start.

The Golden Eagles struggled once again offensively and fell to San Francisco State, 69-43, Friday in a CCAA contest in Main Gymnasium. Cal State L.A. (3-19, 2-13 CCAA) dropped its third straight game and had to settle for a season split with the Gators. The Golden Eagles had won the first meeting in Los Angeles, 60-56.

The Golden Eagles fell behind by 13 points by halftime and then shot just 24 percent in the second half. Cal State L.A. finished the game shooting 27 percent. San Francisco State (12-10, 6-9 CCAA) shot 41 percent and enjoyed a 54-39 rebounding edge. The Golden Eagles also committed 23 turnovers to 16 for the Gators.

Cassie Suffolk led Cal State L.A. with 15 points and seven rebounds. Sequoia Crandell had nine points and seven rebounds, while Jameiz Terrell had six points. Joy Mason had five points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Shyneese Walter had a team-high five assists.

Desiree Butler had 14 points to lead three Gators in double figures. Kalia Williams had 13 points, while ZaLisha Oliver had 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Golden Eagles led only twice, 2-0 and 4-3, after a pair of layups by Amber Whittington. San Francisco State used a 7-0 run to grab a 10-4 advantage and led the rest of the way.

The Golden Eagles pulled to within two points three times, at 18-16 after a 3-pointer by Suffolk, again at 21-19 after a basket by Crandell and for a final time at 24-22 after another 3-pointer by Suffolk. The Gators, though, scored the final 11 points of the first half to take a 35-22 halftime lead.

Suffolk opened the second half with a 3-pointer for the Golden Eagles to make it 35-25, but San Francisco State went on another 11-0 run to break the game open. A 3-pointer by Terrell stopped the run, but the Gators never led by less than 16 points the rest of the way.

A 3-pointer and two free throws by Mason got the Golden Eagles to within 16 points at 56-40 with 6:45 left, but San Francisco State held the Golden Eagles to just three points the rest of the game.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a road game at Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night.
