ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team had its defense working Saturday night, but its offense never got untracked.
The Golden Eagles scored only 11 first-half points and fell to Sonoma State, 52-41, Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in The Wolves Den. Cal State L.A. (0-4, 0-3 CCAA) remained winless on the season, while Sonoma State (4-1, 2-1 CCAA) won for the fourth time in five games.
Sonoma State also beat Cal State L.A. for the sixth time in the last seven meetings between the two programs. Cal State L.A. snapped a five-game losing streak to the Seawolves by beating Sonoma State in the season finale last year in Rohnert Park.
The Seawolves took early control and made sure the Golden Eagles wouldn't make it two straight. Cal State L.A. shot just 24 percent in the first half and trailed by halftime, 28-11. The Golden Eagles heated up in the second half and shot 42 percent, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range.
Jameiz Terrell led the Golden Eagles with 15 points, but she was the only player in double figures.
Stacie Whitley and
Michelle Salemi scored six points each.
Stephanie Barnes had a game-high 21 points to lead Sonoma State, while Christy Shreve had 11 points and eight rebounds.
Cal State L.A. limited the Seawolves to just 29 percent shooting and Sonoma State missed 15 of 16 attempts from behind the 3-point arc. Sonoma State was effective at the free-throw line, making 19 of its 28 attempts. Cal State L.A., meanwhile, made only 2-of-9 attempts.
Sonoma State held a 42-37 rebounding edge and forced 26 Cal State L.A. turnovers while committing only 13.
The Seawolves scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed. A layup by
Sonia Miller got Cal State L.A. on the board. Sonoma State led by as many as 19 points in the first half before a layup by
Shatori Dearman made it 28-11 at halftime.
Cal State L.A. made its best run of the game midway through the second half and pulled to within nine points, 43-34, after a 3-pointer by Salemi with 8:25 to go. The Golden Eagles made it 45-36 after a jumper by Whitley with 6:13 to go, but that was as close as they would get. A jumper by Terrell got the Golden Eagles to within 47-38 with 2:39 remaining, but Sonoma State closed the game out.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with its first home game of the season next Saturday afternoon against Academy of Art.
