Golden Eagles Come Up Short Against Humboldt State

ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team showed some spark in the second half of Thursday's California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Humboldt State, but it wasn't enough to dig out of a first-half deficit.

The Golden Eagles fell behind by 19 points by halftime and were unable to recover in a 68-52 loss at Humboldt State Thursday in Arcata. Cal State L.A. (0-3, 0-2 CCAA) dropped its third straight game to start the season, but battled more effectively against one of the CCAA's contenders. Humboldt State (3-1, 2-0) won its second straight conference game.

Shatori Dearman had a strong game for the Golden Eagles, pouring in a game-high 14 points in 22 minutes. She also had three rebounds. Jazzi Johnson had nine points, three rebounds and four steals and Jameiz Terrell scored eight points. Stacie Whitley had a team-high eight rebounds.

Bree Halsey led three Humboldt State players in double figures. Paige Peterson had 12 points and four rebounds, while Caitie Richards had 11 points.

The Golden Eagles were hurt by 36 turnovers to Humboldt State's 29 and Cal State L.A. made only half of its 32 free-throw attempts. Humboldt State was a more efficient 11-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Cal State L.A. shot 35 percent from the floor, while Humboldt State made 40 percent. The Golden Eagles held a slim 41-39 rebounding edge.

The Golden Eagles also struggled from behind the 3-point line, making only two of 10 attempts. Humboldt State was 7-of-27.

Humboldt State started quickly, scoring the first six points of the game and moving out to a 13-1 lead after five minutes of play. A layup by Johnson, two free throws by Terrell and another steal and layup by Johnson cut the deficit to just seven at 16-9 with 10:44 to go in the first half, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would get.

Humboldt State responded with a 10-2 run and eventually opened up a 19-point halftime lead.

A basket by Dearman and a 3-pointer by Sonia Miller cut the lead to 14 points, 46-32, with 14:40 to go, but Humboldt State scored the next nine points and led comfortably the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a game at Sonoma State on Saturday.
