NAMPA, ID – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was unable to take care of the ball Friday night in a battle against one of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's top teams and it cost them a chance at a win.
The Golden Eagles committed 40 turnovers and fell to host Northwest Nazarene, 89-51, at the GNAC/CCAA Classic. Cal State L.A. (1-5) was unable to string together wins after getting its first victory of the season last Saturday.
The Golden Eagles shot 43.9 percent for the game, but had 40 turnovers to just 21 for Northwest Nazarene (8-1). The Golden Eagles were outrebounded by a slim 34-30 margin, but the Crusaders shot 48 percent from the floor and knocked down 28 of 34 free-throw attempts to just 14-of-20 by Cal State L.A.
Northwest Nazarene shot 58 percent in the second half while making 14 baskets in 24 attempts and the Crusaders made 21 of their 26 free-throw tries to extend a 39-24 halftime advantage.
Jennifer Williams had 18 points to lead four Northwest Nazarene players in double figures. Lindsay Brady had 14 points, while Briaunna King and Kristin Hein had 12 points each.
Northwest Nazarene scored the first 10 points of the game and never trailed. The Golden Eagles pulled to within six points after a basket by Kuzma, 27-21, with 5:15 to go in the half, but Northwest Nazarene scored the next 12 points to take a 39-21 lead. A 3-pointer by
Kelli McClintick made the margin, 39-24, at halftime.
A free throw by
Shatori Dearman to open the second half made it 39-25, but Northwest Nazarene scored the next four points and never trailed by less than 16 the rest of the way. The 38-point margin of victory was the largest of the game for Northwest Nazarene.
The Golden Eagles will conclude play in the two-day tournament with a game against Western Oregon on Saturday at noon.
