LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s volleyball team saw its seven-match winning streak snapped in a four-set California Collegiate Athletic Association battle against No. 2 UC San Diego.
The Golden Eagles, ranked 22nd in the nation, battled evenly in the first three sets before running out of steam in a 25-23, 27-25, 24-26, 25-11 loss to the Tritons in RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A. (16-7, 12-4) lost both regular-season matches to the Tritons (22-1, 14-1).
Zuzana Cizova had 10 kills and 12 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Gabriela Bulawczyk had nine kills and five blocks and
Marquis Mora had eight kills and a season-high 10 blocks.
HIllary Williamson led four Tritons in double figures with 15 kills. Sylvia Schmidt had 14 kills and three blocks, Katie Condon had 12 kills and Julia Freidenberg had 11 kills.
UC San Diego had a 59-39 advantage in kills and hit at a .235 percentage to just .177 for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. had a 15-6 blocking edge.
Kaylynne De La Rosa had 32 set assists, 12 digs and three blocks for the Golden Eagles.
Each of the three sets could have gone either way, but UC San Diego took the first two to take a 2-0 lead. UC San Diego took an 11-6 lead in the opening set, only to see the Golden Eagles rally to take the lead at 14-12 after a block by Cizova and Mora, an attack error, a block by Bulawczyk and a solo block by Mora. Cal State L.A. led as late as 17-16 after a kill by
Chelsea Hamilton, but the Tritons scored the next three points and led the rest of the way. Cal State L.A. pulled within one point four times, the last after a kill by Mora made it 24-23. A service error gave the Tritons the first set.
The second set played out much like the first. Cal State L.A. held a set point at 24-23, but a service error knotted things up. The Golden Eagles fought off a set point at 25-24 after a UC San Diego service error, but the Tritons got kills by Condon and Williamson to win the set.
Cal State L.A. rallied from a three-point deficit midway through the third set and got to set point at 24-22 after a kill by Cizova. UC San DIego scored the next two points to make it 24-24, but a kill by Mora and a bad set gave the Golden Eagles the set.
Cal State L.A. scored the first two points of the fourth set, but things quickly unraveled. UC San Diego went on a big run to take a 10-point lead at 16-6 and the Golden Eagles never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a conference match at San Francisco State.
