SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team put up a battle, but couldn't knock off undefeated Cal State San Bernardino in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in Coussoulis Arena.
The Golden Eagles were all even after two sets and had the Coyotes on the ropes in the third before Cal State San Bernardino went on to a 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16 Friday night. Cal State L.A. (9-6, 5-3 CCAA) had a four-match winning streak snapped.
Cal State San Bernardino, ranked second in the nation, remained unbeaten after 15 matches and sit atop the CCAA with an 8-0 record.
Gabriela Bulawczyk had 16 kills and eight digs to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Zuzana Cizova had 11 kills.
Mary Laupepa had eight kills and two aces, while
Marquis Mora had seven kills and two blocks.
Jane Chafeh had 22 kills to lead the Coyotes, while Samantha Middlehorn had 11 kills and six blocks.
Cal State San Bernardino had a 57-49 edge in kills and hit at a .266 percentage to .191 for the Golden Eagles. The biggest edge for the Coyotes came in blocking, where Cal State San Bernardino had an 11-2 advantage.
The Golden Eagles battled evenly with the Coyotes in the first three sets, all of which could have gone either way. Cal State L.A. took a 22-21 lead in the first set after a kill by
Kassie Faulkner, but a service error, an ace by Camille Smith, a block by Middleborn and Morgan Carty and a kill by Hall gave the Coyotes the last four points and the set.
Cal State L.A. held its lead in the second set after building a 24-21 advantage following a kill by Laupepa and an attack error by the Coyotes. After Cal State San Bernardino pulled to within 24-23, a service error pulled the Golden Eagles even at 1-1.
The third set was also close after the Golden Eagles rallied from an early 17-11 hole. Cal State L.A. got to within 22-21 after three straight attack errors by the Coyotes and got to within 24-23 after a kill by Mora, but a kill by Nicole Moore gave the Coyotes the set and a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Eagles fell behind 6-1 in the fourth set and never recovered. Cal State L.A. got to within 14-12 after a kill by Cizova, but the Coyotes responded with a 10-2 run to get to match point. A service ace by Laupepa staved off one match point, but a kill by Moore ended it.
Kaylynne De La Rosa had 28 set assists, while
Stefanie Gay had a match-high 20 digs.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a match at Cal Poly Pomona.
