Golden Eagles Win Third Straight In CCAA Play

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team kept getting scoring opportunities Sunday and the Golden Eagles' persistence finally paid off.

The Golden Eagles struck for two goals in a 1:10 span of the second half and beat Cal State San Bernardino, 2-0, Sunday at Jesse Owens Track. Jason Swope continued his outstanding play, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute and Morten Marthinsen converted on a penalty shot moments later to give the Golden Eagles some breathing room.

Tobias Hummel had another strong game in goal and made four saves for his second shutout of the weekend and his fourth of the season.

Cal State L.A. (5-2-2, 3-1 CCAA) enjoyed a 21-8 advantage in shots and held an 11-4 edge during a scoreless first half. Cal State San Bernardino goalie Lucas Pepi made four saves, including two spectacular stops in a one-minute span in the first half.

The Coyotes (2-6-1, 0-3-1) had the first outstanding scoring chance when Albert Cabrera got off a hard shot from inside the box that Hummel had to dive to save just two minutes into the game. Lorenzo Loson had a strong chance five minutes later, but Hummel cut down the angle on his shot and made the save.

John Massaquoi was a constant threat in the first half for Cal State L.A. and was stopped twice on sensational stops by Pepi. The first was a point-blank attempt that Pepi was able to deflect just over the crossbar. The second was from the left corner of the box and Pepi made a leaping deflection to keep the game scoreless.

Massaquoi had a third golden opportunity, only to see his shot hit the crossbar from the top of the box in the 28th minute.

Marthinsen also had a couple outstanding chances, including a header that went just wide with two minutes remaining in the half.

The Golden Eagles had an apparent goal by Aza Gomez waved off because of an offsides call about 15 minutes into the second half.

Cal State L.A. got the go-ahead goal and on nice give-and-go deep in Cal State San Bernardino territory. Swope made a pass to Ruben Hansen, who flicked the ball with his heel back to Swope, who got off a shot that found the left corner of the net. It was Swope's sixth goal of the season and his fifth in the past four games.

Marthinsen then notched his sixth goal of the season just 1:10 later when he converted on a penalty kick.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday when the Golden Eagles face Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.
