Summary

Biography

2007-08: Had another outstanding season for the Golden Eagles in her third and final year with the program. Had an overall record of 8-4 in singles, including an 8-3 mark in dual matches. Had a 4-3 record in doubles, including a 2-2 mark in dual matches. Earned first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors. Won the featured match at No. 5 singles against Grand Canyon on April 4 when she beat Sheila Johnson, 6-4, 6-2. A camera crew for the CBS Evening News With Katie Couric was on hand to document the 60-year-old Johnson and highlights from the match and an interview with Avila were broadcast nationally. For her career, had an overall singles record of 33-15. Also had an overall doubles record of 30-15. Finished her career tied for No. 6 all-time in singles wins and No. 5 in doubles victories.

2006-07: Earned first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors. Earned the Cal State L.A. Exceptional Student-Athlete of the Year (female) award for 2006-07 and picked up the team’s Most Improved Award. Also was named to the CCAA All-Academic Team. Compiled a 15-5 record in singles, primarily at the No. 5 position. Also teamed with Isis Jackson for an 18-4 record in doubles, mostly at the No. 3 position. Set a new single-season program record for doubles wins. Won her singles contest against Hawaii Hilo in the NCAA playoffs, beating Justine Abella, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5 singles. Also teamed with Jackson for a win at No. 3 doubles in the playoff match. Advanced to the Round of 16 in the ITA Fall West Regional and to the quarter-finals of the Cal State L.A. Tournament. Teamed with Jackson to reach the doubles finals at the Cal State L.A. Tournament.

2005-06: Had a 10-6 overall singles record for the Golden Eagles in 2005-06 and was the team Most Valuable Player. Was 8-5 in dual matches, including 7-3 at No. 5 singles. Earned CCAA All-Academic honors.

At Pasadena City College: Had the best singles and doubles record on the team.

At Gabrielino HS: Competed in softball and soccer in high school.

Personal: Daughter of John and Angela Avila. Majoring in English. Enjoys playing all sports and reading. Lists going to the NCAA Regionals last year in Hawaii as her most exciting experience in sports.
