LOS ANGELES --Â Samarah DaCoud recorded a match-high 14 kills and Cal State LA responded from an opening-set loss to defeat Cal State Monterey Bay in four sets Saturday at University Gym.
The Golden Eagles won by scores of 21-25, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20 to improve to 3-6 overall and 2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
After dropping a competitive first set that featured 15 ties and nine lead changes, Cal State LA took control of the match. The Golden Eagles held the Otters to a .032 hitting percentage in the second set and evened the contest with a 25-16 victory.
Cal State LA's offense found its rhythm in the third set, producing 16 kills with only two errors on 25 attacks for a .560 hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles carried that momentum into the fourth, hitting .455 with 11 kills and just one error to close out the match.
Cal State LA finished with 48 kills and only 12 errors on 105 attacks for a .343 hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles committed just six attacking errors across the final three sets.
DaCoud led the offense with 14 kills and added six digs, two block assists and one solo block. Amber Walker turned in an efficient performance with 11 kills and only one error on 16 attempts for a .625 hitting percentage.
Isabella Barrios added six kills without an error on eight attacks, finishing with a .750 hitting percentage. She also contributed two solo blocks and two block assists. Teegan Charapata recorded five kills, six digs and a block assist.
Havannah Vogel helped anchor Cal State LA's defense at the net with seven block assists. Oluwatoyin Sunday added four block assists, while the Golden Eagles finished with 13 total blocks.
Ruby Ennis directed the offense with 24 assists, and McKinley Chase added eight assists and a match-high four service aces. Seriah Demski contributed seven assists and one ace.
Juliana Speiski led Cal State LA with eight digs and recorded two of the team's seven service aces. The Golden Eagles limited Cal State Monterey Bay to a .194 hitting percentage in the match. The Golden Eagles begin their first conference road trip on Friday when they head to Cal State East Bay starting at 5 p.m.
