LOS ANGELES -- Samarah DaCoud recorded a double-double and Cal State LA delivered a dominant all-around performance to sweep Menlo in its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener Friday at University Gym.
The Golden Eagles won by scores of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-16 to improve to 2-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Menlo fell to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA.
Cal State LA controlled the match offensively, finishing with 37 kills and only 10 errors on 84 attacks for a season-best .321 hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles also held Menlo to 22 kills and a .011 hitting percentage.
DaCoud led Cal State LA with 11 kills, 13 digs and three service aces. She committed just one attacking error on 25 attempts to finish with a .400 hitting percentage. DaCoud also contributed two block assists and finished with a match-high 15 points.
The Golden Eagles set the tone by recording 17 kills and hitting .371 in the opening set. After taking the first set, Cal State LA's defense took control in the second, limiting Menlo to six kills and forcing 11 attacking errors in the 25-14 victory.
Cal State LA closed the match by hitting .360 with 12 kills and only three errors in the third set.
Amber Walker added eight kills and two block assists while hitting .278. Anaiya Cooper finished with seven kills, four block assists and a .357 hitting percentage.
Havannah Vogel provided an efficient performance off the bench, converting four of her five attacks without an error for a team-best .800 hitting percentage. Isabella Barrios added three kills and four block assists, while Naomi Jackson contributed one kill and three block assists.
Ruby Ennis directed the offense with 19 assists, and McKinley Chase added 14. Teegan Charapata led the Golden Eagles from the service line with four aces and also collected eight digs.
Cal State LA finished with nine service aces, eight total blocks and 42 digs. Juliana Speiski joined DaCoud in double figures defensively with 10 digs. The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday against Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m. inside University Gym.
