SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team was unable to get much going on Saturday in a disappointing California Collegiate Athletic Association loss at San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles matched a season-low with 56 points and fell to the Gators, 84-56, in the San Francisco Federal Credit Union Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza. Cal State LA (7-15, 6-10 CCAA) is now one game back of a group of teams tied for sixth in the conference and two games back of fifth place with six conference games remaining.
Michael Pearson Jr. had 21 points and was 5-of-8 from 3-point range, while
Jordan Hansen had 10 points for the Golden Eagles.
Diego Martinez had 24 points and eight rebounds for San Francisco State (3-20, 2-14 CCAA), while Evan McKnight had 12 points.
Donovan Vickers and
Deraje Agbaosi had six points each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA shot 40.4 percent for the game (21-of-52) and was 10-of-27 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 4-of-8 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot 54.8 percent (34-of-62) and was 6-of-23 from 3-point range. The Gators were 10-of-16 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State had a 43-22 rebounding edge and committed only nine turnovers to 12 for Cal State LA.
The Golden Eagles never led, but got a 3-pointer from Vickers to tie the game at 10-10. A 3-pointer by Hansen kept the Golden Eagles within 17-15, but the Gators went on an 18-3 run that included a 13-0 stretch to open up a 17-point lead at 35-18.Â
A 3-pointer by Pearson Jr. got the Golden Eagles within 38-26 at halftime, but the Golden Eagles allowed the opening basket of the second half and never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
