Golden Eagles Are Good At The End In Road Victory

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team put an end to its frustrating losing streak with a big road victory that came down to the final second.

After Stanislaus State took a one-point lead with six seconds left, Khemanni Davis hit three free throws with 0.5 seconds left to lift the Golden Eagles to a 66-64 victory in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA (8-18, 7-13 CCAA) snapped a five-game losing streak and won for just the third time away from home.

Davis scored a game-high 19 points, including the three clutch free throws in the final second that erased a 64-63 deficit 

Isaiah Fields had 12 points and eight rebounds, Michael Pearson Jr. had 11 points and four rebounds and Damarion Pouncil had 10 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

Malachi Johnson had 12 points for Stanislaus State (12-14, 8-12 CCAA).

Donovan Vickers had six points, including a layup with 22 seconds left that gave the Golden Eagles a brief 63-62 lead. Jordan Hansen also had six points.

Cal State LA shot 43.1 percent for the game (25-of-58) and was 7-of-20 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. Stanislaus State shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) and was 8-of-19 from 3-point range. The Warriors were 8-of-12 from the free-throw line. Stanislaus State had a 41-31 rebounding edge and committed 12 turnovers to just eight for Cal State LA.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, but closed the period with a 3-pointer by Pearson Jr. and a layup by Pouncil to pull to within 40-33 at halftime.

Cal State LA took its first lead of the second half on a 3-pointer by Davis that made it 57-56 with 4:39 left and took a 61-58 lead on a layup by Fields with 2:48 remaining. Stanislaus State scored the next four points to take a 62-61 lead before Vickers scored on a layup to make it 63-62 with 22 seconds to go. Johnson hit a tough jumper to give the Warriors the lead, 64-63, before Davis hit his three free throws with less than one second left.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Cal State San Bernardino.
