LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team had an amazing battle against Westmont on Friday that included a gripping three-set singles contest decided in a tiebreaker.
The Golden Eagles fell to the Warriors, 4-3, at the Billie Jean King Tennis Complex in a nearly four-hour match featuring resiliency and determination on both squads. Cal State LA (0-3) fell by a 4-3 score for the second time in three days, while Westmont (3-3) improved to .500 with the victory.
After the Golden Eagles took the doubles point, they got a singles win from
Maldini Simic at the No. 2 position, but took losses at the No. 3, 4 and 5 singles matches to trail 3-2 with two matches still undecided.
Sofia Pavlova rallied for a three-set win at No. 1 singles to tie it at 3-3 and
Charlotte Downs rallied nicely to force a third set before falling in a tiebreaker at No. 6 singles in the longest contest of the day.
The Golden Eagles took the doubles point thanks to a win at No. 1 doubles from Simic and Pavlova over Thea Donarski and Sabina Salva, 6-3, and a win at No. 2 doubles from
Mane Sargsyan and
Georgiana Parr, 6-4, over Liska Knight and Ellie Triplett.
Simic won her singles match, 6-3, 6-2, over Salva at No. 2 singles, while Pavlova recorded a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Donarski at No. 1 singles.
Parr dropped a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 decision to Justie Pitzer, 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3 singles, Sargsyan fell to Triplett at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1 and
Ainoho Salo fell to Emma Rashid at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-0.Â
Downs fell to Rylee Halsey, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 6 singles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a home match against Point Loma.Â
