ARCATA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team found itself in another hard-fought California Collegiate Athletic Association battle on Sunday and the Golden Eagles endured another tough defeat.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to double-digit leads in the first half for the fourth straight game, but Cal Poly Humboldt erased the deficit by halftime and held off the Golden Eagles, 75-72, on Sunday in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State LA (3-9, 2-4 CCAA) has lost its four conference games by a total of 16 points with three of the losses coming by four points or less.
Cal State LA erased all of a nine-point deficit with six minutes remaining and took a 67-66 lead on a 3-pointer by
Khemanni Davis with 2:21 to go and a 70-69 advantage on a 3-pointer by
Michael Pearson Jr. with 1:30 to go, but the 'Jacks scored the next five points to secure the win.
Deraje Agbaosi led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 16 points and nine rebounds, while
Isaiah Fields had 15 points and four rebounds. Davis finished with 14 points and four assists.
Zaveion Bineyard had a game-high 19 points to lead Cal Poly Humboldt (6-6, 4-2 CCAA), while Rob Jenkins had 12 points and five rebounds.
Pearson Jr. had nine points and three steals for the Golden Eagles, while
Sam Ibeh had seven points.
Cal State LA shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) overall and was 10-of-25 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 10-of-13 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Humboldt also shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) and was 13-of-29 from 3-point range. The 'Jacks were 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Humboldt had a 27-25 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA committed only eight turnovers to 15 for the 'Jacks.
Cal State LA started quickly and took a quick 14-3 lead after an 8-0 run that featured four points each from Agbaosi and Fields. The Golden Eagles led for most of the first half, but the 'Jacks surged and got a late 3-pointer to take a 34-32 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles took their first leads of the second half when Fields hit a jumper and then made a steal and layup to give them a 48-45 advantage with 12 minutes to go and a 3-pointer by Ibeh put the Golden Eagles ahead, 51-50, with 10:38 left. Ibeh hit another 3-pointer to tie it at 55-55 with 8:42 to go, but Cal Poly Humboldt scored the next eight points to regain the lead.Â
The Golden Eagles then got go-ahead 3-pointers from Davis and Pearson Jr. to take a 70-69 lead, but the 'Jacks got the next five points to take control.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Stanislaus State on Thursday.
