Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Finish On The Right Side Of Thriller

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team has already endured more than enough tight losses and the Golden Eagles were able to exhale after a close decision finally went their way on Thursday.

Isaiah Fields hit a go-ahead jumper with six seconds to play and the Golden Eagles got a final defensive stop at the buzzer to record a 57-56 win over Stanislaus State on Thursday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in University Gym.

Cal State LA (4-9, 3-4 CCAA) entered the game coming off road heartbreakers last week at Chico State and Cal Poly Humboldt, but secured its first close win of the season. The Golden Eagles' previous wins this season came by 16 points, 18 points and 44 points.

Fields scored 19 points, including the game-winner that was originally ruled a 3-pointer, but was changed to a two-point basket after review. Deraje Agbaosi had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double and Khemanni Davis had 11 points.

Malachi Johnson had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Stanislaus State (7-6, 3-4 CCAA), while Mark Jones III had eight points.

Connor Scales had eight points, four rebounds and four assists for the Golden Eagles, while Donovan Vickers, Michael Pearson Jr. and Jordan Hansen had two points each.

Cal State LA shot 40.4 percent for the game (23-of-57) and was 6-of-23 from 3-point range. Fields did most of the damage from long-distance, hitting 5-of-10 attempts. The Golden Eagles were 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Stanislaus State shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) and was 4-of-21 from 3-point range. The Warriors were 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. Stanislaus State had a 44-29 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA committed nine turnovers and forced 13.

The Golden Eagles got back-to-back 3-pointers from Fields and Davis to open the game and opened up their biggest lead, 20-11, after a pair of free throws by Scales. Stanislaus State, though, battled back and scored the final five points of the half to take a 34-31 halftime lead.

Cal State LA opened up another nine-point lead in the second half, 43-34, after a dunk by Agbaosi with 12 minutes to go. Once again, though, Stanislaus State battled back and went on a 10-0 run to tie it at 43-43. The Warriors took a 54-52 lead, only to see Fields hit a 3-pointer for a 55-54 Cal State LA lead with 3:32 to go.

Neither team scored until a layup by Jones III with 30 seconds remaining gave the Warriors a 56-55 lead. After a timeout, Fields hit his long jumper that proved to be the game-winner.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against UC Merced.
