Golden Eagles Make It Eight Straight With Big Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team kept the good times rolling on Saturday with an important victory in a California Collegiate Athletic Association showdown against Chico State.

The Golden Eagles rallied from a 10-point deficit after one quarter and pulled away late for a 77-66 win over the Wildcats in University Gym. Cal State LA (14-5, 11-3 CCAA) won its eighth straight game and pulled into a second-place tie with Chico State (15-5, 11-3 CCAA). The Golden Eagles and Wildcats are two games back of first-place Cal Poly Pomona and one game ahead of fourth-place Cal Poly Humboldt.

Sofia Fidelus had 18 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. Nevaeh Asiasi had 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists, Mariah Blake had 13 points and 14 rebounds and Gabriella Rones had 11 points.

Madison Parry had a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds in an outstanding performance for the Wildcats. Kaylie Edge had 14 points.

Amaya Fuentes had seven points and two rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Ariyah Smith had six points and nine assists.

Cal State LA shot 37 percent for the game (27-of-73) and recovered nicely after making just 20 percent in the first period (4-of-20), including a 2-of-12 showing from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles finished 10-of-32 from 3-point range and were 12-of-13 from the free-throw line. Chico State shot 60 percent in the opening period and finished at 43.6 percent for the game (24-of-55). The Wildcats were 11-of-27 from 3-point range and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 40-30 rebounding edge and committed only 11 turnovers to 18 for Chico State.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 12 points in the opening quarter, but got a jumper by Asiasi to close the deficit to 20-10. Cal State LA then outscored Chico State, 21-10, in the second period to take a 31-30 halftime lead. A three-point play by Ronyae Jackson gave the Golden Eagles their first lead since the opening minute of the game, 29-28 and a late basket by Asiasi gave them a 31-30 halftime advantage.

Chico State built a 48-40 lead in the third quarter, but the Golden Eagles got five straight points from Fidelus and a basket from Asiasi to get close and got a 3-pointer from Rones and a basket from Asiasi to take a 54-52 lead into the final period.

Cal State LA opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer by Rones, and back-to-back layups from Blake to open up a 61-52 lead and led the rest of the way. After the Wildcats got to within five points with 6:50 to go, the Golden Eagles used a 6-0 run fueled by two free throws by Blake and a basket by Fidelus to open up a 69-58 lead with 3:42 to go. The Golden Eagles maintained their edge the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Cal State East Bay.
