Golden Eagles Keep It Rolling On The Road

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team made some program history on Thursday with a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win at Cal State East Bay. 

The Golden Eagles won a program-record ninth straight game with a 101-57 victory over the Pioneers in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (15-5, 12-3 CCAA) exceeded the previous record of eight set in 1986 and 1979 and kept pace with the leaders in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles pulled into sole possession of second place and stay two games back of first-place Cal Poly Pomona with seven conference games remaining.

Nevaeh Asiasi set a new career high in points with her first 30-point game to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. She also had eight rebounds asnd five stats in another spectacular performance. Amaya Fuentes had 14 points and six rebounds and Kyara Walters had 11 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Sofia Fidelus had 10 points and 12 assists for a double-double.

Asiasi has now had 25 points or more in six games and 20 or more in nine. She is second in the conference in scoring with 18.0 points per game.

Krista Sheaffer had nine points for the Pioneers (9-13, 8-7 CCAA).

Mariah Blake had eight points and 13 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Ariyah Smith had nine points and five assists and Ronyae Jackson had eight points and four rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 45.7 percent for the game (43-of-94) and was 5-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 10-of-14 from the free-throw line. Cal State East Bay shot 34.3 percent (23-of-67) and was 2-of-13 from 3-point range. The Pioneers were 9-of-17 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a slim 50-49 rebounding edge and committed only five turnovers to 23 for Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles scored 101 points for the second time this season.

Cal State LA broke the game early, jumping out to a 59-35 by halftime and extending the lead to 82-45 after three quarters.

The Golden Eagles scored the first eight points of the game and took their first double-digit lead after a basket by Fidelus made it 12-2 less than three minutes into the contest. The Pioneers reduced the deficit to seven points before a layup by Smith made it 31-22 after one period.

Cal State LA had a big 28-13 edge in the second period to open up a 24-point lead by halftime. The Golden Eagles led by nine points, 42-33, with four minutes left in the half, but outscored the Pioneers 17-2, closing out the half with two baskets by Mary Cotton and one by Blake to take a 59-35 lead at the break.

The Golden Eagles closed out the third quarter with a 3-pointer by Fidelus and a steal by Asiasi that led to a layup by Walter to take an 82-45 lead into the final period.

Cal State LA hit the century mark when a basket by Jocelynn Townsend made it 100-53 with 1:37 to go.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at San Francisco State.
