SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team continues to go where no previous team has gone before.
The Golden Eagles stretched their program-record winning streak to 10 games on Saturday with an 84-66 win over San Francisco State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the SFFCU Gymnasium at Don Nasser Family Plaza. Cal State LA (16-5, 13-3 CCAA) remains alone in second place, one game ahead of Chico State and Cal Poly Humboldt and two games back of first-place Cal Poly Pomona.
Nevaeh Asiasi had another outstanding game, scoring a game-high 24 points and grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds. It marked the 10th game this season Asiasi has scored 20 or more points in a game. She was coming off a career-high 30 points in Cal State LA's win over Cal State East Bay on Thursday.
She was one of four Golden Eagles to reach double figures on Saturday.
Sofia Fidelus had 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists,
Ariyah Smith had 12 points and four assists and
Amaya Fuentes had 10 points and five rebounds.
Samantha Myhr had 18 points to lead San Francisco State (5-17, 3-13 CCAA), while Athena Brombacher had 15 points and Simone Murray had 11 points.
Gabriella Rones had nine points for the Golden Eagles, while
Ronyae Jackson had seven points and nine rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 46.7 percent for the game (35-of-75) and was 5-of-17 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-13 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot 38.5 percent and was 11-of-36 from 3-point range. The Gators were 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 50-32 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to 20 for the Gators.
The Golden Eagles trailed early and were tied at 13-13 before a layup by Rones and a three-point play by Asiasi gave them an 18-13 lead after one quarter.Â
A 3-pointer by Rones opened the second quarter for the Golden Eagles and a basket by
Mary Cotton gave them a 10-point edge at 26-16. San Francisco State cut the margin to six points, but a 3-pointer by Asiasi and layups by Fidelus and Smith gave the Golden Eagles a 42-31 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles saw the lead trimmed to 48-42 midway through the third quarter, but a jumper by Rones started a 10-0 run that stretched the lead to 16 points.
Kyara Walter had a 3-pointer, Asiasi had three points and Fuentes had a basket during the run. A 3-pointer by Fuentes gave the Golden Eagles a 64-50 heading into the fourth quarter.Â
Cal State LA led by as many as 24 points during the final period.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
