Golden Eagles Race Past Cal Poly Humboldt

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team played one of its best quarters of the season and never looked back in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win against Cal Poly Humboldt.

The Golden Eagles surged to a 26-8 lead after one quarter and went on to an impressive 74-47 win over the 'Jacks Thursday in University Gym. Cal State LA (13-5, 10-3 CCAA) built a 41-20 lead by halftime and a 62-30 lead after three quarters.

The Golden Eagles won their seventh straight game and pulled into a third-place tie with the 'Jacks, two games behind conference co-leaders Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State.

Ariyah Smith scored a season-high 21 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures in an outstanding performance. She also had seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. Amaya Fuentes had 18 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, while Sofia Fidelus had 12 points and was a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range. Nevaeh Asiasi had 10 points, nine rebounds, six assists and a career-high seven steals.

Sienna Cherwinski had 12 points and Jordyn Smith had nine points and eight rebounds for Cal Poly Humboldt (12-7, 10-3 CCAA).

Ronyae Jackson had eight points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Gabriella Rones had five points and two rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 40 percent for the game (26-of-65) and was 12-of-32 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-18 from 3-point range in the opening half. The Golden Eagles were also 10-of-14 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Humboldt shot 32.2 percent (19-of-59) and was just 5-of-26 from 3-point range. The 'Jacks were 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 44-33 rebounding edge and committed 14 turnovers to 19 for Cal Poly Humboldt.

The Golden Eagles took control early. After allowing the opening basket of the game, the Golden Eagles went on an 18-2 run to open up an 18-4 lead. Smith and Fidelus hit 3-pointers and after the 'Jacks got a layup from Smith, the Golden Eagles scored the next 12 points. Asiasi made a layup, Fuentes hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Jackson and Smith followed with layups.

A jumper by Asiasi and a 3-pointer by Fidelus made it 23-6 and a 3-pointer late in the period by Fuentes gave the Golden Eagles a 26-8 lead.

Cal State LA scored the final five points of the second quarter on a 3-pointer by Fidelus and a layup by Smith at the buzzer to take a 41-20 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles scored the first seven points of the third period to take a 48-20 lead and led by as many as 34 points following a 3-pointer by Rones that made it 55-21 with 3:47 left in the period. A pair of free throws by Fuentes and a layup by Smith made it 62-30 entering the fourth quarter.

Cal State LA got a jumper from Jackson to open the fourth period and led by as many as 34 points in the final quarter.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Chico State at 1 p.m.
