Golden Eagles Begin Second Half With Road Win

CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team opened the second half of California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a big road win at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start and never let up in a 78-65 win over the Toros on Saturday in the Torodome. Cal State LA (12-5, 9-3 CCAA) pulled to within one game of third place Cal Poly Humboldt and two games back of co-leaders Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State.

Cal State LA, which beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 87-83, on Thursday in Los Angeles, never trailed on Saturday while beating the Toros for the second straight time.

Sofia Fidelus led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 22 points and four assists, while Nevaeh Asiasi had another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Mariah Blake had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Bryanne Lopez-Wood had 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Toros (4-13, 4-8 CCAA), while Anela Thomas had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Amaya Fuentes had nine points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Ariyah Smith had eight points and Kyara Walter had seven points.

Cal State LA shot 38.6 percent for the game (27-of-70) and was 7-of-19 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 17-of-25 from the free-throw line. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 37.7 percent (26-of-69) overall and was 4-of-16 from 3-point range. The Toros were 9-of-15 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA held a slim 48-46 rebounding edge and committed 13 turnovers to 15 for Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Cal State LA scored the first nine points of the game and led the rest of the way. Asiasi hit a pair of free throws, Fidelus hit a jumper, Asiasi hit a free throw, Smith hit a jumper and Asiasi made a jumper to give the Golden Eagles a quick 9-0 lead. After the Toros pulled back to within 9-7, Blake scored four straight points to push the lead back to six. Back-to-back layups by Walter and Asiasi gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead of the game at 19-9 and they settled for a 19-13 lead after one quarter.

Cal State LA got consecutive 3-pointers from Fuentes and Fidelus and a basket by Asiasi to take a 28-15 lead in the second quarter and a 3-pointer by Fidelus late in the period gave the Golden Eagles a 39-27 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles built leads as large as 21 points in the third quarter, the final time after a layup by Walter made it 58-37, and Cal State LA took a 61-41 lead into the final period after a 3-pointer by Fidelus at the buzzer.

A 3-pointer by Gabriella Rones gave the Golden Eagles a 64-43 lead with 9:33 to go and the Golden Eagles led comfortably down the stretch, leading by double-digit margins the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Cal Poly Humboldt.
