Golden Eagles Unable To Complete Sweep Of Toros

CARSON -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team turned in its best performance of the season on Thursday in an exciting win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, but the Golden Eagles were unable to repeat that effort on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early and the Toros evened the series with a 72-56 California Collegiate Athletic Association win in the Torodome. Cal State LA (6-12, 5-7 CCAA) opened the second half of conference play with a road defeat, while second-place Cal State Dominguez Hills (14-5, 9-3 CCAA) improved to 5-2 on is home court.

Cal State LA, which shot 55 percent in its win on Thursday, shot just 32.7 percent on Saturday, including just 24.1 percent in the first half while the Toros jumped out to a 32-20 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles were just 1-of-13 from 3-point range in the opening half.

Khemanni Davis had 12 points for the Golden Eagles, while Deraje Agbaosi had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Za-Ontay Boothman had 13 points to lead four Toros in double figures. Jalen Brown had 11 points, while DaSean Stevens and Josiah Sanders had 10 points each.

Isaiah Fields had eight points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Connor Scales had eighth points and a steal.

Cal State LA was just 18-of-55 for the game and finished 6-of-28 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-19 from the free-throw line. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 50 percent for the game (28-of-56) and was 5-of-14 from 3-point range. The Toros were 11-of-17 from the free-throw line. Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 41-31 rebounding edge and committed 14 turnovers to 12 for Cal State LA.

The Golden Eagles fell behind 8-2 in the opening stages of the game and never recovered. The Golden Eagles got to within 10-7 after a jumper from Davis, but the Toros led by as many as 14 points in the opening half and took a 32-20 halftime lead.

Cal State LA fell behind by as many as 26 points in the second half before back-to-back 3-pointers from Fields and Scales, but the Golden Eagles were unable to get closer than 16 points down the stretch.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Cal Poly Humboldt.
