LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team turned in one of its best performances of the season in a thrilling win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles got a go-ahead 3-pointer from
Khemanni Davis that broke a 69-69 tie with four minutes to go and withstood a late Toro push to pull out an 87-82 win in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in University Gym. Cal State LA took a 78-73 lead after a dunk by
Deraje Agbaosi with 1:34 to go and got four free throws from
Isaiah Fields and
Michael Pearson Jr. in the final 13 seconds to hold off the Toros.
Agbaosi had a sensational game for the Golden Eagles with 22 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Davis finished with 15 points.
Josiah Sanders had a game-high 23 points and six rebounds for the Toros, while DaSean Stevens had 17 points.
Fields finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Donovan Vickers had 12 points courtesy of a 4-of-5 effort from 3-point range. Pearson Jr. had eight points and six assists, while
Connor Scales had seven points and two assists.
Cal State LA shot 54.9 percent for the game (28-of-51) and was 11-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 15-of-18 from the free-throw line. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) and was just 4-of-17 from 3-point range. The Toros were 17-of-22 from the free-throw line. Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 32-24 rebounding edge and committed 11 turnovers to 12 for the Golden Eagles.
The second half featured exciting back-and-action with Cal State LA shooting 60 percent (15-of-25) and going 5-of-8 from 3-point range, while Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30).
The Golden Eagles started well and took a 14-8 lead about eight minutes in on a 3-pointer by Fields. That was the largest margin of the half and Cal State LA took a 36-35 halftime lead on a basket by Agbaosi with five seconds remaining.
Cal State Dominguez Hills opened the second half with a 3-pointer by Stevens and a layup by Sanders to grab a 40-36 lead, but the Golden Eagles quickly tied it with a rare four-point play by Davis, who buried a 3-pointer and was fouled. Four straight points by
Brase Dottin and a dunk by Agbaosi gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game at 61-52 with 12:38 remaining.
The Golden Eagles, though, were outscored, 15-4, and fell behind 67-64, before Vickers tied it with a 3-pointer with 5:25 to go. A dunk by Fields put the Golden Eagles ahead, 69-67, but a dunk by Sanders at the other end tied it back up. Davis broke the tie with a 3-pointer and a layup by Agbaosi gave the Golden Eagles a 74-71 lead with 2:45 to go. Sanders cut it to 74-73 with 2:27 to go before a layup by Davis made it 76-73 with two minutes to go. A steal by Pearson Jr. led to a dunk by Agbaosi that made it 78-73, but Sanders countered with a jumper to cut the margin to 78-75 with 1:10 left.Â
After a Cal State LA turnover, the Toros were called for an offensive foul that negated a basket and two free throws by Fields extended the lead to 80-75 with 13 seconds to go. A layup by Jalen Brown made it 80-77 with seven seconds left, but a pair of free throws by Pearson Jr. completed the victory.
Cal State LA will begin the second half of conference play on Saturday with a return matchup against Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.
