Golden Eagles Fall Late At Chico State

CHICO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had a big California Collegiate Athletic Association road win in its grasp Friday night, but the Golden Eagles couldn't ring in the new year with a victory.

The Golden Eagles carried a seven-point lead into the final period, but went just 1-of-15 in the fourth quarter and Chico State overtook them for a 60-57 win in Acker Gym. Cal State LA took a 55-46 lead on a basket by Mariah Blake with 6:47 to go, but managed just two free throws the rest of the way and Chico State went on a 14-2 run to close out the game.

Cal State LA (6-4, 3-2 CCAA) fell two games back of Chico State (9-3, 5-0 CCAA), which shares the early conference lead with Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly Humboldt.

Sofia Fidelus had 17 points and six rebounds to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures. Gabriella Rones, making her return for the Golden Eagles since being sidelined with an injury sustained in December of 2024, hit four 3-pointers and had 12 points. Ronyae Jackson had 12 points and six rebounds.

Chico State shot 33.3 percent (22-of-66) and was 7-of-20 from 3-point range. The Wildcats were 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. Chico State had a 45-30 rebounding edge and committed 16 turnovers to 11 for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles surrendered the last five points of the first quarter to trail 18-13 after the opening period and fell behind by as many as 10 points, 35-25, late in the second quarter. Baskets by Fidelus and Jackson stopped the Wildcats' run and a 3-pointer by Fidelus made it 37-32 at halftime.

Cal State LA then enjoyed its best stretch of the game and outscored Chico State, 21-9, in the third quarter to take a 53-46 lead entering the fourth. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Jackson and Fuentes gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the second half, 43-41, and back-to-back 3-pointers by Rones were followed by a steal and layup by Fidelus to give them a 51-44 lead. A late basket by Fidelus made it 53-46 entering the fourth period.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter until an offensive rebound and basket by Blake made it 55-46 with 6:47 to go. Asiasi hit a pair of free throws to give the Golden Eagles a 57-53 lead with 2:12 to go, but Chico State scored the final seven points to close out the game.
