Golden Eagles Drop A Tough One At Humboldt

ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team fought to the wire against an unbeaten California Collegiate Athletic Association team for a second straight game and endured the same result.

Two days after coming up short down the stretch at Chico State, the Golden Eagles fell short at Cal Poly Humboldt on Sunday, 74-73, in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State LA (6-5, 3-3 CCAA) trailed by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter, but a pair of missed free throws late were costly. Cal Poly Humboldt (8-4, 6-0 CCAA) remains as one of three teams still unbeaten in conference play.

Nevaeh Asiasi had 20 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season, while Sofia Fidelus had 16 points, four rebounds and four assists. Mariah Blake had 13 points and five rebounds.

Jordyn Smith led four 'Jacks players in double figures with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Kyori Lloyd had 15 points and five rebounds.

Amaya Fuentes had 11 points and three rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Ariyah Smith had seven points, five rebounds and four assists.

Cal State LA shot 47.7 percent overall (31-of-65) and was 5-of-16 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were just 6-of-13 from the free-throw line, which was one of the big differences in the contest. Cal Poly Humboldt shot 35.8 percent (24-of-67) and was 7-of-23 from 3-point range. The 'Jacks were 19-of-25 from the free-throw line. 

Cal State LA had a 39-37 rebounding edge, but committed 22 turnovers to 16 for the 'Jacks.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as five points in the opening quarter, but a layup by Ronyae Jackson and a 3-pointer by Fidelus tied iat 14-14. Fidelus scored the last nine points of the quarter for the Golden Eagles to give them a 20-16 lead after one period.

The Golden Eagles fell behind, 40-38, at halftime and trailed by as many as nine points in the third period before layups by Kyara Walter and Blake made it 57-53 entering the fourth.

Cal State LA fell behind, 64-55, early in the fourth, but stayed within striking distance and had chances to win it at the end. A three-point play by Smith pulled the Golden Eagles to within 69-66 with 2:48 remaining and a 3-pointer by Fuentes made it 71-68 with 1:56 left. A steal and layup by Smith made it 74-71 with 1:16 remaining and a pair of free throws by Asiasi acc9ounted for the final points of the game with 33 seconds left.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Stanislaus State.
