Golden Eagles Unable To Slow Down Otters

SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team completed a tough weekend on the road with a loss against a hot-shooting Cal State Monterey Bay team on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles had a strong offensive showing, but allowed 54 first-half points and fell to the Otters, 96-82, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Otter Sports Center. Cal State LA (5-11, 4-6) dropped its second straight game over the weekend and fell to 1-5 on the road in conference games. Cal State Monterey Bay (10-6, 5-5 CCAA) shot 61.3 percent and hit nine 3-pointers while building a 54-37 halftime lead.

Khemanni Davis scored 22 points to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures, while Deraje Agbaosi had a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double. Isaiah Fields had 14 points and three rebounds.

Jaden Tengan had a game-high 26 points for Cal State Monterey Bay, while Choi Deng had 15 points and Michael Mora had 14 points and nine rebounds.

Michael Pearson Jr. had nine points for the Golden Eagles, while Donovan Vickers had six points and Brase Dottin had five points.

Cal State LA shot 44.9 percent for the game (31-of-69) and was 9-of-31 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-15 from the free-throw line. Cal State Monterey Bay shot 54.5 percent for the game (36-of-66) and was 15-of-34 from 3-point range. The Otters were 9-of-16 from the free-throw line. Cal State Monterey Bay had a 42-30 rebounding edge. Cal State LA committed only 10 turnovers to 14 for Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Golden Eagles held a 12-6 lead early in the game and still led 17-12 after a 3-pointer by Vickers. The game was tied at 25-25 before the Otters went on a 21-5 run to break the game open. 

Cal State LA rallied back and cut the margin to six points after a 3-pointer by Pearson Jr. and a basket by Fields made it 69-63 and a layup by Davis kept the margin at 71-65. The Otters, though, went on a 16-2 run to open up a 87-67 lead and put the game out of reach.

Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday.
