Golden Eagles Work Overtime For CCAA Road Win

SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team needed extra time to finally put the finishing touches on an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory on Thursday.

Nevaeh Asiasi led the way once again, scoring a game-high 21 points while adding six rebounds and three assists. The two-time CCAA Player of the Week scored 20 or more points for the fourth straight game and for the seventh time this season. She continues to lead the CCAA in scoring with 17.9 points per game. Smith had a season-high 16 points, going 4-of-8 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Maddie Leiva had a team-high 20 points for Cal State San Marcos (6-8, 3-6 CCAA), while Kaity Haan had 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Ronyae Jackson had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Mariah Blake had nine points, eight rebounds and five steals and Sofia Fidelus had eight points and eight assists. Gabriella Rones hit a pair of 3-pointers and had six points.

Cal State LA shot 39.5 percent for the game (30-of-76) and was 5-of-19 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 18-of-23 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Marcos shot 38 percent (27-of-71) and was 11-of-34 from 3-point range. The Cougars were just 8-of-14 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Marcos had a 50-41 rebounding edge, but committed 33 turnovers to 21 for Cal State LA.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 11 points in the second quarter, but were able to slice the margin to 34-30 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles then scored the first eight points of the third quarter on a basket by Asiasi and six straight points by Jackson to take the lead. The Golden Eagles led by as many as five points in the period, but a 3-pointer by Leiva gave the Cougars a 55-52 lead entering the final period.

The Golden Eagles trailed, 64-57, with 6:21 left, but a 3-pointer by Rones, a basket by Jackson, a 3-pointer by Fidelus and a layup by Smith fueled a 10-0 run that gave them a 67-64 lead with 3:17 left. The Cougars then got back-to-back baskets from Tatum Tamashiro, the second one giving them a 68-67 lead with 15 seconds to go. Smith, though, was fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound and hit the second of two free throws with two seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Asiasi opened the scoring in overtime and after Haan tied it at 70-70, the Golden Eagles scored the next seven points to take command. Blake got the go-ahead basket to start the run with 1:19 to go, Jackson followed with a basket and Smith hit three of four free-throw attempts to make it 77-70 with 47 seconds left. Leiva hit a 3-pointer to make it 77-73, but Smith hit four more free throws and Blake scored a late basket to account for the final score.
