SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's
Nevaeh Asiasi was at it again Saturday in an important California Collegiate Athletic Association win at Cal State Monterey Bay.
Asiasi matched a career-high with 27 points and set a new career high with 15 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles to an 82-64 victory over the Otters in the Otter Sports Center. Cal State LA (10-5, 7-3 CCAA) won its fourth straight game and pulled to within one game of third-place Cal Poly Humboldt in the conference race.
Asiasi, meanwhile, continued her sensational play. She has now scored 20 or more points in five straight games and eight for the season and she recorded her sixth double-double on Saturday.
Sofia Fidelus had 14 points, five rebounds and three assists and
Mary Cotton stepped up with a season-high 10 points and six rebounds.
Jennifer Moreno Ortiz had 11 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (8-7, 5-5 CCAA).
Ariyah Smith had eight points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Kyara Walter and
Mariah Blake had eight points each.
Cal State LA shot 46.6 percent for the game (34-of-73) and was 3-of-12 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-15 from the free-throw line. Cal State Monterey Bay shot 39.7 percent for the game (25-of-63) and was 6-of-21 from 3-point range. The Otters were 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 48-30 rebounding edge and committed 16 turnovers to 20 for the Otters.
Cal State LA trailed by as many as nine points in the opening quarter, the final time at 15-6, but closed the margin to 20-19 by the end of the period after back-to-back baskets by Asiasi.
The Golden Eagles got back-to-back 3-pointers from Walter to break a 28-28 tie in the second quarter and back-to-back baskets from Cotton completed a 10-0 run that made it 38-38.Â
Cal State LA saw a 15-point lead sliced to nine points at 48-39, but responded with two baskets from
Ronyae Jackson, a layup by Asiasi and a jumper from Fidelus to fuel an 8-0 run and open up a 56-39 advantage. The Golden Eagles led 68-53 heading into the fourth quarter. Cal State LA led by as many as 19 points in the final period to close out the win.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
