Golden Eagles Fall To Hot-Shooting Cougars

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Cal State San Marcos team Thursday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in The Sports Center.

The Golden Eagles surrendered a season-high 87 points to the Cougars, who took over late in the first half and pulled away in the second half of an 87-62 victory. Cal State LA (5-10, 4-5 CCAA) had a two-game winning streak snapped and remained in a four-way tie for sixth place in the conference. Cal State San Marcos (9-5, 6-3 CCAA) won its third straight game and moved into a tie for third in the conference.

Khemanni Davis had a team-high 17 points for the Golden Eagles, while Isaiah Fields added 11 points. 

Chris Carillo had a game-high 24 points to lead four Cougars in double figures. Jaylin Leslie had 15 points.

Deraje Agbaosi had eight points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Brase Dottin had eight points and three rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 41.9 percent for the game (26-of-62), but was just 6-of-28 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Marcos shot 56.6 percent (30-of-53) and made 62.1 percent of its shots in the second half. The Cougars were 15-of-28 from 3-point range and 12-of-14 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Marcos had a 36-24 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to 13 for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA led by as many as five points in the first half and held a 26-24 lead following a jumper by Michael Pearson Jr. and a dunk by Agbaosi gave the Golden Eagles a 28-26 lead. A free throw by Agbaosi gave the Golden Eagles their last lead, 29-28, before Cal State San Marcos closed the half with a 13-2 run for a 41-31 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles fell behind by 16 points, 54-38, early in the second half following a barrage of Cal State San Marcos 3-pointers and never recovered. 

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State Monterey Bay.
